CRESWELL, Ore. Alexandra Schmidt carded a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday to help the Lewis-Clark State College Women's Golf team grab the first-round lead of the Bushnell Invitational, which is being played at Emerald Valley Country Club.

Meanwhile, the LC State men stand second, just one-shot out of the lead heading into Monday's final 18 holes.

Schmidt recorded the women's best round of the day by six shots to pace the Warriors. After starting her round with a bogey, she birdied consecutive holes on Nos. 4 and 5 to shoot a 35 on the front nine. She then had birdies on 10 and 18 to offset a couple of bogeys for a 36 on the back nine.

"Alex played fantastic today with her first tournament round under par," LC State coach Brady Campbell said. "This is the round we have been waiting for her to have. Her fall has been so solid and she deserved a round like this."

Schmidt's performance helped the Warriors to a nine-shot lead over Corban in the team standings. Deana Caruso added a 79 for LC State.

"We have a little lead and are excited to have a chance to get the women their first win," Campbell said.

On the men's side, Willamette carded a team score of 300, while LC State stands at 301. Unlike the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournaments, which feature 36 holes for the men on the opening day, only 18 holes were played on Sunday.

Kristof Panke matched par with a 72 to pace the Warriors. He was 2-under on the front with a 34, but ran into some trouble on the back nine with a 38. He stands third overall, three shots behind leader Tristan Belue of the College of Idaho.

Warrior Jorgen Lie Viken is tied for sixth at 74.

"We didn't quite have our best game today and fought a tough golf course," Campbell said. "We will be just behind the leader and will battle to come back tomorrow. Kristof was solid for us today and helped us stay in it."

This tournament is the final event of the fall for the Warriors.
