CALDWELL, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State College golfers Carlos Davila and Lauren Hamm posted solid first days on Monday and are in contention for the individual overall titles at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament.

Playing at the Timberstone Golf Course in cool and mostly rainy conditions, both golfers shot 1-over-par 73s in the opening round that featured temperatures in the low 40s. The men played another 18 on Monday and Davila posted the best round of the day with a 68, which gave him a 3-under-par 141 total and a two-shot lead.

"Carlos started out kind of shaky," LC Golf Coach Kyla Lien said. "He was 3-or-4 over after 5 holes and came back and finished strong. During the second round, he only had one bogey on a par 5. He did have to scramble out there. He had to make some good pars from tough spots and birdies from not so easy lies. He just played good all-around golf for the conditions today because it was pretty cold and miserable out there."

Lien said the rain started early in the round and continued for the first 18 holes. The course also had its challenges because it plays long and has large greens, leading to more three-putts than normal.

As well as the conference tournament title, Davila also is a tight four-way race for the conference's Player of the Year on the men's side. The Player of the Year combines all scores from the three regular season conference tournaments as well as the three rounds from the conference tournament. After Monday's play, Davila and Corban's Casey Crossland are tied at 817, with Bushnell's Jon Holzgang a shot back at 818 and Oregon Tech's Mayson Tibbs at 819.

Hamm's 73 put her in second place after the first round, just a stroke behind Oregon Tech's Aerin Song, who matched par at 72. Lien said Hamm was 1-under-par through 15 holes but had a double bogey on the 16th before finishing with two pars.

"She started out well and played great," Lien said. "I think she had one or two birdies so she just stayed level. Honestly, I'm impressed with the women's scores because of the conditions and it was a longer course, over 6,000 yards for the women. I think Lauren did a good job of hitting fairways and keeping her approach shots in close proximity to the hole. She did a great job of adjusting to the elements out there.

In the race for the women's conference Player of the Year, Hamm trails Oregon Tech's Payton Canon by two shots entering Tuesday.

"Lauren has had a great season and will be playing with Oregon Tech tomorrow so they will be going at it," Lien said. "She is peaking right now and she has that eye of the tiger going for her."

Davila and Hamm hold LC's best hopes of qualifying for the NAIA national tournaments in late May. The team winners from each tournament qualify for their respective national tournaments and the individual winners, if not from the winning team, have a shot at qualifying as well with an at-large entry into the tourneys.

In the team competition, LC State stands second on the women's side at 319, 17 shots behind leader Oregon Tech, while the men's squad is fifth, 19 shots behind leader Multnomah.

The final 18 holes of both tournaments will be played Tuesday and the forecast is for better weather conditions. The high Tuesday is expected to be 67 with no rain and a light breeze.
