DAY 1 RESULTS
GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State College Men's and Women's Golf teams kicked off their 2022-23 seasons by being at or near the top of the leaderboard after Sunday's first round of the Coastal Collegiate Classic, being played at the Salishan Golf Links.
The Warrior women shot a team score of 324 to hold a 10-stroke lead over No. 23 Oregon Tech in what is now a two-team race after Ottawa (Ariz.) had a player disqualified and left it without a complete team.
On the men's side, the Warriors stand second at 307, just three shots behind Bushnell, which leads at 304 in the six-team tournament.
The second round is set for Monday and the final round will be played Tuesday.
Alexandra Schmidt and Deana Caruso both carded 77s for the Warriors. Schmidt was fairly solid throughout her round, carding a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine and a 38 on the backside. Caruso ran into some trouble on the front and after carding a 43, she shot a 2-under-par 34 on the backside.
On the men's side, LC State's Jorgen Lie Viken is tied at the top with Bushnell's Cade Stubbs as both shot 1-over 73s. Viken shot a 38 on the front and then a 1-under 35 on the back nine. Teammates Devon Caruso and Sondre Andresen added 77s.
LC State first-year coach Zach Anderson said it was good to get the season started.
"Played really tough as far as course conditions today," Anderson said. "It's a funky course. But I'm proud of the way they grinded it out. However, we have work to do."
