Warrior Weekly Preview - Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2024

MEN'S GOLF

The Warrior Men traveled to Arizona for the OUAZ Fall Invitational and will compete against ranked teams from the NAIA and NCAA Division III to start the week. The three-round tournament will be played with two rounds on Monday and one round on Tuesday at Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club.

The field features NAIA Top 25 teams in No. 9 Marian (Ind.) and No. 13 OUAZ (Ariz.), as well as the No. 9 team in DIII in Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. LC State, Victoria (B.C.), Benedictine-Mesa (Ariz.), Arizona Christian and Park (Mo.) are all receiving votes in the NAIA poll and will be in Surprise.

Oscar Behle helped lead the Warrior men to a second-place finish at the first tournament of the season. He tied for fifth with fellow senior Alex Navarro tied for eighth. LC State placed fifth at the OUAZ Fall Invitational two years ago, but this will be the first event in Surprise for all five on this year’s squad. The lineup for this week features seniors Behle and Navarro, junior Kye Krall, sophomore Luke West and freshman Lucas Ortega.

VOLLEYBALL

After a tough road trip in Oregon, LC State Volleyball is back in the P1FCU Activity Center this weekend to host College of Idaho and No. 2 Eastern Oregon. The Warriors (9-6, 6-4) are currently fifth in the Cascade Conference with C of I (9-8, 5-4) just behind in sixth and EOU (16-1, 8-1) at the top.

LC State is 7-6 against the Yotes dating back to 2012 but have not won since 2022. LC State pushed C of I to five sets last season in Lewiston behind a match-high 15 kills by Juliauna Forgach Aguilar and six blocks each by Missy Mortensen and Karissa Lindner. The Warriors outblocked the Yotes 12-9 in the match.

Idaho Central Credit Union is the sponsor of Friday’s match and LC State will host Military Appreciation Night.

Eastern Oregon has taken all 11 of the meetings between the two teams since 2012. LC State forced four sets last year at home with 14 kills by Forgach Aguilar and 20 assists from Esther Kailiponi. Natany Felix Guimaraes had 19 digs. EOU leads the CCC in opponent hitting percentage (.101) and is second in hitting percentage (.245), assists per set (12.58), kills per set (13.42) and blocks per set (2.69). Kiauna Mack is the top blocker in the CCC with 1.82 blocks per set and Hannah Ledgerwood ranks second in service aces per set (0.56).

The Warriors are second in the conference in digs per set (16.73). Forgach Aguilar is the top attacker in the CCC at 4.63 kills per set and leads in total kills by 70 with 273. She ranks seventh in the NAIA in kills per set and 10th in points per set (4.9).

CROSS COUNTRY

No. 14 Warrior Women’s Cross Country and a select group from the No. 13 LC State men will be in action this weekend at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., on Saturday.

The men will race first at 9:30 a.m. in an 8k with the women to follow at 10:20 a.m. in a 5k. LC State's women's team has shown its youth so far this season with strong performances from freshmen Lily Bennett and Damaris Kibiwot. Along with upperclassmen Grace Tiegs and Abigail Gorton, the pair of first-years have placed in the top five for the Warrior women at each of the first two races. Spokane Falls CC transfer Camille Ussher rounded out the top five each time to keep the front group of Warrior women consistent. Tiegs led LC in the first meet and was named the CCC Runner of the Week, and Bennett stepped up to be the first Warrior across the line in the most recent race.

The Warrior men that did not race in Missouri last week will be in action on Saturday. LC State ran well at the Gans Creek Classic with Kobe Wessels leading the way for the Warriors. The race will be a good opportunity for the Warriors to test their depth with a younger lineup in action.
