Warrior Weekly Preview - Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2025

BASEBALL

The 2025 LC State Baseball season kicks off on Thursday for the No. 7-ranked Warriors at the East/West Challenge in Lake Myrtle, Fla. LC State will open the year with contests against Ave Maria (Fla.), St. Thomas (Fla.), No. 11 Southeastern (Fla.) and No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan. 

Brian Danner will travel with the team to broadcast games on KOZE. Live stats will be available for all contests and the game at Southeastern will be the lone with a live stream. 

A full preview of the season will be available later this week.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

LC State Women’s Tennis hosts NCAA Division I Montana in the Tennis Center on Friday at 5 p.m. The contest is the third in a row against DI competition for the Warrior women after matches against Boise State and Idaho State last weekend. 

The Warriors hosted the Griz last season in Lewiston and fell 7-0. April Buckingham and Heidi Moyo played a close match in the No. 1 doubles spot a year ago and fell in a tiebreaker. 

The contest will have live stats and a live stream from the Tennis Center.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The No. 19 Warrior women (16-4, 10-4) swept the weekend at home with victories over Evergreen State (Wash.) and Northwest (Wash.) and will look to carry the momentum into contests against Warner Pacific (Ore). (7-13, 4-10) and Multnomah (Ore.) (6-14, 4-10).

Happy Day is the sponsor of Friday’s games and Elementary School Night, and St. Joesph Regional Medical Center is the sponsor on Saturday.

LC State is 14-0 against the Knights since 2005 and defeated WPU 83-38 earlier this season. The Warrior defense held Warner Pacific to just 20.8% shooting from the field on 10 field goals. Ellie Sander led the contest with 14 points and Mataya Green added 10. 

The Warriors are 9-0 when playing Multnomah since 2015 and defeated the Lions 78-70 in Portland this season. Sander tallied 16 points, Green added 14 with 11 rebounds and Darian Herring and Tatum Brager each scored 13 to help LC State overcome 31 points from Multnomah’s Reya Lee. She hit nine 3-pointers in the contest. The game on Saturday will mark the final meeting between the two programs as Multnomah announced that it will close at the end of the academic year. 

Multnomah is second in the CCC in free throw percentage (.744) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (.332). The Lions lead in 3-pointers made per game (8.7). Jersey Huerta leads the conference in scoring (19.6) and is third in free throw percentage (.838). Gracie Browning is second in free throw percentage (.840) and Makayla Torkornoo is tied for the CCC lead in 3-pointers made with 54. 

LC State leads the Cascade in blocked shots per game (5.1), assists per game (18.3), steals per game (13.6) and turnover margin (8.30). The Warriors are second in scoring offense (76.2), scoring defense (55.4), scoring margin (20.8) and field goal percentage (.482). Sander leads individually in steals per game (2.9) and Sitara Byrd is fourth (2.6), while Herring leads in total blocked shots (56). 

Sander is fourth in the conference in scoring (14.3). Green is second in field goal percentage (.577) with Herring third (.568) and Sander in fourth (.559). Herring is third in assists per game (4.0).

MEN'S BASKETBALL

No. 21 LC State Men’s Basketball (15-5, 10-4) opened the second half of the Cascade Conference season with wins over Evergreen State (Wash.) and Northwest (Wash.) and will host Warner Pacific (Ore.) (10-9, 5-9) and Multnomah (Ore.) (12-7, 8-6).

LC State is 10-5 against the Knights dating back to 2004 and defeated WPU 73-60 this season in Portland. After being tied 37-37 at the half, the Warriors took the second half 36-23 to earn the victory behind a 22-point, 10-rebound night from Alton Hamilton. Gorden Boykins scored 15 points and John Lustig added 10. WPU’s Matt Solomon tallied 16 points while Jurrien Sparks scored 13. 

WPU is second in the CCC in field goal percentage defense (.432). Tre’von Cason is second in steals per game (2.3).

The Warriors defeated Multnomah 90-72 on the road and are 10-3 against the Lions since 2005 heading into the final meeting ever between the two programs. Multnomah announced in January that it will close at the end of the academic year. MaCarhy Morris led LC State with 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists in Portland while Keilan Torkornoo led the Lions with 18 points and six boards. 

Multnomah is third in the CCC in scoring (82.2) and leads in steals per game (9.4). Torkornoo is third in scoring (16.6) and Noah McCord is third in rebounding (9.3) and leads in steals per game (2.4). Noah Madsen is third in assister per game (3.7)

The Warriors rank second in the conference in field goal percentage (.490) and third in field goal percentage defense (.433). LC is third in rebounding defense (31.5) and second in blocked shots per game (3.4).

Alton Hamilton leads the Cascade in rebounding (9.8) and is second in scoring (17.1). He is second in blocked shots per game (1.2).

TRACK & FIELD

Warrior Track and Field had a successful weekend in Moscow that resulted in Emily Collins, Sydnie Zywina and Griffen Parsells being voted CCC Athletes of the Week. LC State had four national-qualifying marks at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open with Parsells in the 800m, Zywina in the triple jump and Collins in the 600m and distance medley relay with Grace Tiegs, Camille Ussher and Damaris Kibiwot. 

LC State is back in action on Feb. 1 at the Inland Northwest Invitational hosted by Whitworth at The Podium in Spokane. Live results will be available for the meet.
