It took a little kick start from senior guards
Caelyn Orlandi and
Natahnee Spencer, but once the Lewis-Clark State College women's basketball team finally warmed up, it was over that quick for the University of Fraser Valley on Saturday.
Â
The two helped the Warriors place six players in double figures scoring as LCSC rolled to a 110-63 win over its Canadian visitors at the LCSC Activity Center.
Â
The win was the second straight for LCSC over Fraser Valley and improved the Warriors to 2-0 on the young season, while Fraser Valley fell to 3-6.
Â
The 110 points tied for the sixth highest in program history. The record is 117 points, a mark LCSC hit has hit twice. Last year, the Warriors had 117 points against Northwest Indian College, which tied the mark it originally set in the 2006-07 season against Bethany College. It's also the 10
th time LCSC has scored 110 or more points in a game and the 36
th time overall in program history the Warriors have scored in triple digits.
Â
Unlike Friday's season opener when the Warriors jumped out to a big lead early, Saturday's contest saw Fraser Valley grab the early edge at 12-10. At that point, LCSC ran off 10 straight points, which included seven from Orlandi, and eventually went on a 19-2 run for a 29-14 lead. LCSC then added a 17-4 run to end the second quarter for a comfortable 52-24 advantage at halftime.
Â
"It was kind of the opposite of last (Friday) night," LCSC coach
Brian Orr said. "I thought they came out on fire. Our defense wasn't as intense and offensively we hit a couple of shots early, but then had a tendency to come up short a few times. But I really like the way we hung in there, the second quarter especially.
Â
"When we finally took the lead, I thought from that point on, we played well offensively."
Â
Orlandi, an NAIA All-American a year ago, sparked the Warriors with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. She also had four assists. Spencer, who hit a 3-pointer and some free throws early to help the team pull away, finished with 18 points. She made 4-of-5 3-point attempts.
Â
Brittany Tackett added 15 points and five steals, while
Brooke Litalien, Jansen Edminston, and
Jossilyn Blackman pitched in 10 apiece.
Â
All 10 Warriors scored at least five points in the contest.
Â
"In the second half we really concentrated on trying to find the open player and we had 11 assists," Orr said. "I thought that really helped our offense. We had fastbreak points, and we moved the ball and shot the ball really well in the second half. That carries over to the defensive end as well."
Â
Defense also helped turned the game into the Warriors' favor as LC extended its zone to half court, which helped it force 27 turnovers. LC had 15 steals and was able to convert some into fastbreak opportunities.
Â
"What was exciting was our post play defensively," Orr said. "They got the ball inside on us early, but the final three quarters we kind of turned it around. We kept the ball out of the post and controlled the boards, especially with Jossilyn out there."
Â
Blackman led the Warriors eight rebounds, which helped LC to a 34-30 rebounding advantage.
Â
For the night, LCSC was 39-of-69 from the field for 56.5 percent, and 10-of-25 from the 3-point line for 40 percent. The Warriors had a 56-22 advantage for points in the paint.
Â
"We have so many weapons out there offensively," Orr said. "I know when we start Natahnee we are kind of undersized out there, but we have so many weapons out there that we are hard to guard."
Â
Fraser Valley was 22-of-51 from the field, 43.1 percent, and 7-of-17 at the 3-point line, 41.2 percent.
Â
The Warriors return to action next weekend when they host another Canadian school, Trinity Western University, for a pair of games. Friday's contest will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by Saturday's game at 2 p.m. Both will be at the LCSC Activity Center.
