Warrior men finish strong to defeat Warner Pacific 81-68

LEWISTON, Idaho – Tournament MVP Jeremy Franklin scored all 14 of his points in the second half to help the Lewis-Clark State College men's basketball team pull away late and defeat Warner Pacific 81-68 in the Clearwater Casino and Lodge Classic at the LCSC Activity Center on Saturday night.

Franklin, who had a career-high 32 points in Friday's 92-66 win over Portland Bible College, helped the Warriors go on a 15-0 run during the final four minutes of Saturday's contest. LCSC led 66-65 with 3:54 left and hit 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to pull away.

"That was a really good team and for us to only have nine guys and protect home court against a team like that says a lot about the heart these guys have," LCSC coach Brandon Rinta said.

The win lifts the injured-riddled Warriors to 6-0 on the season. LCSC had only nine healthy bodies suited up after Darius Alexander reinjured his hand in Friday's win. Alexander broke the hand before the season and Rinta said it hasn't fully healed. He expects Alexander to perhaps miss a couple of weeks as it heals.

"We ordered a large crate of bubble wrap and we are just going to bubble wrap people up at practice," Rinta joked.

Saturday's contest was the biggest challenge the Warriors have faced this season. Warner Pacific, now 3-2 on the season, is almost a mirror image of LCSC with fast and athletic players.

"Warner Pacific will finish in the top three of their conference and I think they have a good chance at winning it," Rinta said. "This was a good test for us against a top tier NAIA team, at least they are going to be in the national tournament (NAIA Division 2). This was a good barometer for us."

LCSC led early 4-0, but Warner Pacific responded with the next 14 points for its largest lead of the night. The Warriors, behind a big first half from guard Cory Dollarhide, cut the margin to one before the Knights settled for a 37-34 halftime lead.

Franklin hit a pair of 3-pointers and a jumper to help LCSC start the second half on a 13-2 run. Warner Pacific, behind the tandem of Xavier Cannefax and Collin Malcolm, kept the contest close. Cannefax scored seven points during an 11-4 Warner Pacific run that made the score 66-65 with 3:54 left.

Trea Thomas and Derrick White both hit two free throws to give the Warrior some breathing room and a bucket by Dollarhide and two free throws from Franklin helped the Warriors roll to a 81-65 lead before a 3-pointer by Warner Pacific ended the scoring.

"Defensively, our guys just dug in and did a good job of switching some ball screens," Rinta said about the key to holding the Knights to three points down the stretch. "We had guys in front of them and we did a great job rebounding as well, especially with the smaller lineup tonight.

Franklin finished with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Dollarhide, an all-tournament team selection, was perfect from the floor. He went 7-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-4 at the 3-point line, to finish with 21 points. White added 11 points, while Race Martin had eight to go along with his team-high seven rebounds.

Cannefax led Warner Pacific with 17 points, while Malcolm had 15 to go along with 12 rebounds. Both were named to the all-tournament team along with Carson Drummer of Montana Tech and William Bratcher of Portland Bible College.

The Warriors will be back in action next Friday and Saturday in Caldwell at a tournament hosted by the College of Idaho. LCSC will play the Yotes on Friday at 6 p.m. and then take on Multnomah College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Montana Tech 75, Portland Bible 63

Carson Dummer led a balanced attack to help Montana Tech defeat Portland Bible 75-63 in Saturday's first game of the Clearwater Casino and Lodge Classic.

Dummer had game-highs in both points and rebounds (seven) as Montana Tech improved to 4-1 on the season. Teammates Chris O'Neil and Nick Fitts chipped in 12 points apiece. Fitts' contribution came from off the bench as Tech's bench outscored Portland Bible's bench 31-13.

William Bratcher led Portland Bible with 15 points, four rebounds and two assis, while Kenese Peneueta added 14 points.
