LEWISTON - The Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team improved to 6-1 Wednesday, defeating Whitworth 74-50. The No. 2 Warriors broke a 17-17 first quarter tie by outscoring the Pirates 21-10 in the second quarter at the Activity Center, then outscored Whitworth 36-23 in the second half.
"I thought Jansen (Edmiston) had her best game of the year," Coach
Brian Orr said after the game.
Jossilyn Blackman led all scorers with 11 points, and Edmiston added 10. Kiara Burlage came off the LC bench and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and scored eight points. Other Warrior substitutes played a key role in the game, outscoring Whitworth 34-12 off the bench with Abbie Johnson leading the way with nine points.
Both teams were cold from the field, as LC shot just 37.5 percent for the game, and Whitworth 32 percent.
"I was disappointed with our offensive rhythm in the first half, but it came around a little in the second half," Orr said.
A huge difference in the game came from the free throw line, where the Warriors made 19-20, which includes four Warriors going 4-4. The Warriors won the battle of the boards 47-33, and forced 20 Pirate turnovers. LC turned the ball over 15 times.
"Our goal is to have less than 12 turnovers, and we are getting closer, "Orr added.
LC now travels to Caldwell, Idaho, to play in the Lady Coyote Classic. The Warriors play Eastern Oregon on Friday at 4 p.m. (PT), and then host College of Idaho Saturday.
