MOSCOW, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State women's basketball coach
Brian Orr saw plenty of positives Sunday afternoon at the University of Idaho despite the 82-67 loss in the exhibition game at Memorial Gym.
"I was disappointed in how we started but I liked how we fought back," Orr said. "This was a really good learning experience for us. I know we got better today – no matter what the score says."
The Warriors had three players in double figures with freshman
Peyton Souvenir hitting 50 percent from the field to lead the way with 16 points. Junior
Hailey Turner added 14 and senior
Lauren Johnson had 10. Turner also was the Warriors' leading rebounder with eight, while Souvenir had five boards.
Idaho took the early lead, leaving the Warriors with ground to make up from the beginning. That type of start was a concern of Orr's.
"We didn't some out strong," he said. "In a game like this – when you're playing against a Division I team, when you know they have athletes all around you, you have to be strong with the ball. We just came out a little tentative."
The Warriors overcame that start to put pressure on the Vandals and keep it there for most of the game. They stayed within 10 points – and often trailed by less than five, until the third quarter started to wind down. They committed a flurry of turnovers in the final minutes of the period and the Vandals capitalized to take a 13-point, 68-55, lead into the final 10 minutes.
"It was like our turnovers were bang, bang, bang," Orr said. "You just can't turn it over. When we made mistakes, they made points."
The Warriors wound up shooting 37.5 percent from the field, while holding the Vandals to 41.9. A disappointment to Orr was the total of just eight assists – and 21 turnovers for his team. The Warriors did have 10 steals and Idaho wound up with 19 turnovers.
