LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Unable to get a key hit or out when needed, the eighth-ranked Lewis-Clark State College baseball team fell to Madonna University 13-9 in a non-league game on Friday.
The contest was a wild one for five innings as both teams struggled to find pitching to shut the other down. After five innings, there were a combined 21 runs scored on 21 hits and four errors. Things then calmed down as there was only one run scored in the final four innings and it came on a solo home run.
Despite scoring nine runs, the Warriors had their fair share of problems getting the key hit as they stranded 14 on base. LCSC also used four pitchers who combined to allow 13 hits and five walks. The Warriors also committed three errors that led to six unearned runs.
Madonna, located in the Detroit suburb of Livonia, Mich., got on the board with a run in the first, but LCSC responded with a six-run third inning for a 6-1 lead.
Matt Thompson was hit by a pitch and was replace by courtesy runner
Emilio Alcantar.
Logan Griffin singled Alcantar to third and
Brock Ephan followed with an RBI single to tie it at 1-1.
J.J. Robinson doubled in Griffin and
Seaver Whalen was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Tyler McDowell singled in two runs and the fifth run later came in on a throwing error. In his second at-bat of the inning, Thompson finished the LCSC rally with a run-scoring single.
In all, the Warriors sent 11 batters to the plate in the third and collected five hits.
LC's comfortable lead, however, didn't last long. Madonna put up four runs in the third, two of which on Taylor Grezlakowski's double, and then took the lead with two runs in the fourth when Thompson, LCSC's catcher, threw wildly trying to throw out a base runner and his error allowed both runs to score.
LCSC regained the lead at 9-7 with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Micah Brown and
Evan Douglas drew one-out walks and both moved up a base on a passed ball. Thompson then singled in Brown, and moved to second on the throw from the outfield.
Raymond Pedrina then singled in two runs.
Madonna regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a five-run outburst on five hits. A pair of RBI singles brought in the first two runs while a bases-loaded walk broke the 9-9 tie. Grezlakowski drove in the final two with a single.
Grezlakowski picked up his fifth RBI of the game with a solo home run in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Thompson went 3-for-4 with two RBI to pace the Warriors, while McDowell had two hits and two RBI. Ephan, Robinson and Griffin also had two hits apiece, while Pedrina drove in two runs.
LCSC starting pitcher Gabe Burland gave up six hits and five earned runs in his two innings, while
Tanner Simpson gave up one hit and two unearned runs in 1.1 innings.
David Wilson, who took the loss, allowed four hits and five runs (just one earned) in his one inning, while
Tyler Burch allowed two hits and a run in his 3.2 innings.
It's the sixth time in 14 games this season LC has scored nine or more runs, but it's also the third time it has allowed 13 or more runs in a game.
Madonna improved to 11-10 with the win, while the Warriors fell to 9-5. LCSC plays again on Friday against host Georgia Gwinnett.
