KEIZER, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team ended its regular season on a disappointing note, dropping an 11-4 NAIA West decision to Corban University on Sunday at Volcanoes Stadium.
The setback ended LCSC's win streak at 15 and dropped it to 35-13 on the season and 22-8 in NAIA West play. Despite the loss, LCSC won the NAIA West regular-season crown as the University of British Columbia was second at 21-11.
LCSC will now be off for 26 days before the first day of the 61
st annual Avista NAIA World Series, which will be held at Harris Field in Ed Cheff Stadium starting on May 26. The break will be the longest break LCSC has ever had between its last game and the start of the Series. That came about because LCSC chose not to play in the conference tournament next week as it already has a berth in the Series as the host team.
LCSC got off to a solid start with two runs in the top of the first on Sunday, but the rest of the game belonged to Corban, which finishes its season 14-31 overall and 8-24 in league play.
Corban scored three runs apiece in the first, third, and eighth innings and took advantage of four Warrior errors, which led to six unearned runs.
LCSC starter
Matt Gorgolinski fell to 0-2 after he went one inning and gave up three runs on two hits and three walks.
Daulton Blackwell went five innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts, while
David Wilson pitched the final two innings and gave up four unearned runs with three walks and one strikeout.
J.J. Robinson continued his hot bat as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while
Gunnar Buhner went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Raymond Pedrina opened the game by being hit by a pitch and
Micah Brown reached on an error. Robinson then singled in a run through the right side and Corban's second error of the inning allowed the second run to score.
Corban scored the next seven runs before LCSC scored in the top of the sixth. Brown doubled to open the inning and an out later, Robinson doubled to left to cut Corban's lead to 7-3.
Buhner opened the top of the seventh with a home run to cut it to 7-4 and the Warriors loaded the bases on three walks with two outs, but Robinson flied out to right to end the threat.
Corban added a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to make it 11-4.
