HAVRE, Mont. –
Lauren Johnson made two free throws with 11 seconds to play and
Hailey Turner added two more with 2.9 on the clock to secure the Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team's 55-50 Frontier Conference victory at Montana State-Northern Friday night.
The Warriors (13-7 overall, 4-5 league) were locked in a back-and-forth battle with the Skylights throughout the night. It wasn't until freshman
Delaney Henery knocked down a 3 from the corner with 1:40 left that LC took the lead, 50-48, for good.
"It was a big win for our team," coach
Brian Orr said, "because we had to make plays down the stretch and we got it done on both ends of the floor."
While there key shots at the end, the Warriors thrived on the variety of players who contributed to the decision.
"We finally had several players step up when we needed it," Orr said.
Peyton Souvenir led all Warrior scorers with 11 points – all in the first half.
Brittany Tackett added nine and Turner finished with eight. Included in Henery's seven were her big shots at the end, which was the same story for Johnson's five-point effort. There were key rebounds down the stretch, too, to give LC possessions and opportunities to win.
And there was the defensive effort that allowed the Skylights to make just 17 of their 60 field goal attempts.
"We can credit our defense for this win," Orr said.
