LEWISTON, Idaho – It took some extra points to get it done, but the Lewis-Clark State Volleyball Team returned to their winning ways with a three-set victory (28-26, 25-21, 32-30) over MSU-Northern.
Brooke Kaawa led the charge for the Warriors with 12 kills, and
Hayley Alvarez notched her second double-double of the season with 16 assists and 10 digs.
"I think that our energy kept us in it and there wasn't a lot of negativity that we've felt in some past games," Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman said.
After the Skylights jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the first set,
Rachel Gregg and Alvarez responded for LC with kills to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead. A four-point run including a pair of kills from
Aubrey King pushed the advantage to 8-4, but MSUN battled back to even the set 12-12. The conference opponents battled it out, sitting at a tie on multiple occasions. The Warriors fought of a set-point to tie things 26-26 with a kill from King before a service ace from
Madeleine Taylor helped end the set at 28-26.
The second set started in the same fashion, with MSUN taking a quick 3-1 lead. Tied 6-6, the Warriors took advantage of three-straight Skylight errors to push ahead 9-6.
Alexa Van Vleet sparked a small four-point run that was capped by another ace from Taylor to give LC a 13-7 lead. MSUN cut the lead to one at 20-19, but Kaawa, Alvarez and
Jordan Phelan put an end to the run with three-straight points. The Warriors maintained the lead and took set two 25-21.
An ace from Phelan put LC ahead 4-2 in the third set of the match, but the Skylights built momentum to take an 11-8 lead. MSUN continued to lead until 21-19 when three-straight attack errors put the momentum back on the Warriors' side. At 30-30, the Warriors were finally able to string two points together on two attack errors by the Skylights to earn the three-set victory.
"I thought MSU-Northern played really well and it made us have to execute," Pohlman said. "Our team was pretty responsive, and I think that is going to continue to be important."
As mentioned, Kaawa led the team with 12 kills while Gregg added 10. Alvarez notched her double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs, and
Josilyn Remick dished out a career-high 16 assists.
Gionni Brown had 14 digs.
"Brooke played one of her best games tonight," Pohlman said of the junior hitter. "It was maybe the best game she's played all year."
The Warriors travel to Rocky Mountain College for their next match on Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
