LEWISTON, Idaho – The Battlin' Bears of No. 7 Rocky Mountain College showed why they are the top team in the Frontier Conference with a strong performance in the LC Activity Center on Saturday afternoon. They swept the Warriors in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-21). They now sit at a record of 13-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.
The Warriors got off to a strong start with three-straight points to open the match.
Aubrey King got things started with a kill from
Lauren West and
Rachel Gregg followed with back-to-back kills. Rocky Mountain pulled ahead 5-4, but a kill from
Alexa Van Vleet and a Battlin' Bears attack error put the Warriors back in front 6-5. A kill from Van Vleet and two attack errors pushed the LC lead to 10-7, but the Bears went on a four-point stretch to regain the lead at 13-11. They held the lead for the remainder of the set to close it out with a 25-21 win.
Rocky Mountain kept their momentum heading into set two. Three-straight points gave them a quick lead and they stretched their advantage to 9-5. Kills by
Sydney Lawrence, Gregg and Van Vleet kept LC in the game with a deficit of four, but Rocky Mountain went on to take the set 25-21.
Tied 4-4 in the third set,
Brooke Kaawa and Gregg added a kill each to take a 6-4 lead. A kill from Gregg and a block by Van Vleet and King pushed the Warriors to a 12-7 lead, their largest of the match. Kills from King and Kaawa sandwiched a service ace by
Jordan Phelan to give LC a 17-13 advantage, but the Bears battled back to a 20-20 tie before running away with their third 25-21 set victory of the night.
King led the Warriors on the night, hitting an effifcient.409 attack percentage with 12 kills. Gregg notched a double-double, her ninth of the season, with 12 digs and 11 kills.
Gionni Brown led with 15 digs and West dished out 32 assists.
"We saw a little response and a little push-back and I think that that fight is going to go a long way," Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman said. "We have to learn how to make that the norm."
The Warriors have an almost two week break before they begin the second half of conference play.
"We need to look at that and use it to look at our weakness and make that weakness a little less weak, and how we can amplify our strengths a bit. We have to make sure we are fighting for every point," Pohlman said.
LC travels to Spokane, Wash. on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to take on Whitworth for the second time this season. The Warriors defeated the Pirates in straight sets at home in September.
