BUTTE, Mont. – After one of most successful seasons in the last 10 years, the Lewis-Clark State Volleyball Team saw their 2018 season come to a close with a loss to No. 8 Rocky Mountain College. After sweeping Carroll in the Quarterfinal, the Warriors fell to the top-seeded Battlin' Bears in the Semifinal 3-0 (25-20, 25-18). They finish the season 17-9 overall.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first set before the Battlin' Bears rallied to tie things at 3-3. Rocky Mountain went on a run to take a 15-8 lead before
Rachel Gregg hammered a kill into the back corner to build some momentum.
Alexa Van Vleet sent down a shot of her own to cut the deficit to 16-11. LC put together a run of five-straight with kills from Van Vleet and
Aubrey King, but the Rocky Mountain offense continued to charge on and the Battlin' Bears took the set 25-20.
LC struck first in the second set with a pair of kills from Van Vleet and one from Kaawa to take a 4-1 lead. Rocky battled back to even the set 4-4 before an LC attack error gave them the lead. The Bears' run lasted until 9-4, when Van Vleet tallied a kill and
Hayley Alvarez followed with one of her own to cut the deficit to 9-6. Another run by Rocky brought the score to 16-9 to force an LC timeout.
Josilyn Remick found King, and
Gionni Brown dished up a rare libero-kill to bring the Warriors back into the game at 16-11. The Bears once again took control of the set to win 25-18.
The Battlin' Bears ran away with the third set, ending the match with a 25-15 victory.
Rachel Gregg led the Warriors with 10 kills in her final match, and fellow seniors King and Van Vleet followed with nine and eight, respectively. Senior setter West dished out 31 assists and Brown and Phelan each tallied 15 digs. Gregg completed her career with a double-double, adding 13 digs to her day.
Lauren West ended her career as a Warrior ranked seventh in career-assists and second in 40-plus and 50-plus assist matches. Gregg sits eighth in double-digit kill matches.
Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman began a process in his first season at the helm of Warrior Volleyball that saw LC find success it hadn't seen in some time.
"Compared to where we were in the beginning, we've made great strides," Pohlman said. "We have been able to build for future years, and that has given us great opportunities and strong footholds for the coming years."
