LEWISTON, Idaho – The No. 17 Lewis-Clark State Warriors suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night when they dropped their matchup with No. 3 (NAIA DII) College of Idaho by a final of 73-60. Though the Warriors played a strong second half, the Yotes had a big enough first half to take the contest.
The Warriors took a quick 5-0 lead to begin the game with a basket from
Trystan Bradley and a three-pointer from
Josiah Westbrook. The Yotes rebounded quickly, though, to take control of the half. A College of Idaho three-pointer at the 9:06 mark gave the Yotes a slim 14-13 advantage and they held the lead for the rest of the game.
LC won the second half, outscoring the Yotes 36-31.
David Shedrick got the scoring started with a jumper a minute in. At 11:22, Westbrook hit a three to cut the deficit to single digits at 51-44, but the Yotes recovered quickly to fend off any type of a comeback.
The College of Idaho hit nine threes in the first half alone and shot over 50 percent from the floor throughout the night. They were 11-for-19 from three-point territory. LC shot 40 percent from the floor, but were just 4-for-26 from behind the arc.
"C of I was by far the more aggressive and tougher team tonight," Head Coach
Austin Johnson said. "They're a great team and they're going to have a great season. This is a great learning experience for our guys as this had a conference feel and National Tournament feel. We need to get better and tighten up some things so we can be successful moving forward."
Martin led the Warriors with 19 points and nine rebounds while
Damek Mitchell tallied 14 points.
The Warriors face New Hope Christian tomorrow at 8 p.m. to conclude the Clearwater River Casino and Lodge Classic.
