SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Warriors traveled to Southern California for their first game of the 2018 Westmont Holiday Classic and faced off with No. 22 The Master's.
Jossilyn Blackman notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and
Hailey Turner led the scoring with 12 points in the upset win over a top-25 team.
The Warriors got off to a strong start, using a pair of 3-pointers from
Abbie Johnson and Blackman to jump out to an 8-5 lead. LC carried the lead in the first quarter until the Mustangs hit a 3 to gain the advantage at 14-12 with three minutes on the clock. The Master's led 16-12 after the first 10 minutes.
Turner kicked off a 10-point run with a 3-pointer to open the second quarter. Johnson gained possession on a steal to go coast-to-coast and put LC back in front 17-16 at 6:44.
Kiara Burlage drained a pair of free throws before hitting a 3 to stretch the lead to 22-16 a minute later. In the final three minutes of the half, the Warriors outscored the Mustangs 11-4 to take a 33-24 advantage heading into the locker room.
LC continued their strong performance in the second half, outscoring their opponent 12-6 in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Three-straight offensive rebounds by the Warriors resulted in a foul by The Master's, sending Blackman to the charity stripe. The senior drained one of two before Turner hit a bucket at 8:46 to push LC further ahead at 36-24. The largest lead of the quarter came with just over three minutes in the quarter when Burlage hit two free throws to increase the LC lead to 17 points at 49-32. The Warriors led 53-36 heading into the final frame.
Delaney Henery dropped the first three points for the Warriors in the fourth quarter as The Master's tried to creep in on the lead. A 3 from Turner gave LC back its momentum at 7:41, giving the Warriors a 59-44 advantage. A 3 from Henery dropped with under six to play to push the lead to 20 at 64-44.
Jansen Edmiston hit two free throws and a layup in the final minute to seal the Warriors' 70-55 victory over the top-25 Mustangs.
Turner led the offense with 12 points while Blackman did her part on both ends of the court with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Burlage rounded out the trio of Warriors with double-digits points with 10 of her own. Johnson was just one board and point shy of a double-double with nine of each.
The Warriors defended the boards well, pulling down 49 rebounds compared to The Master's 33. This proved to be the difference maker in the game.
"We haven't played a game in 15 days so there was a little concern coming into this game. I thought our defense really set the tone," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "Our press forced some early turnovers and it disrupted their offensive flow the whole game."
"We got off to a great start offensively, especially the first half when we were making 3's," Orr said. "We had a lot of players set up and make big plays all game. It was a total team effort. I was also pleased with our rebounding efforts. It was a point of emphasis this past week so it was nice to see that work pay off. We are looking forward to facing another top-ranked team tomorrow."
LC faces the host team, No. 11 Westmont, tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara, Calif.
