LEWISTON, Idaho –
Damek Mitchell drained two free throws with 12.5 seconds remaining and
Cory Dollarhide connected on a pair at the 4.2 mark to help Lewis-Clark State College preserve its 63-60 victory over Montana State-Northern in a key Frontier Conference matchup Saturday night at the Activity Center.
After Mitchell's two put the Warriors up 61-57, MSUN responded with a 3-pointer by Justin Dunsmore to cut the LC lead to 61-60 and set the stage for Dollarhide's security shots.
"It was a wild one, wasn't it," coach
Brandon Rinta said after the Warriors improved to 20-6 overall, 8-5 – and third, in the league with four games to play. "They did a lot of things right. But, I'll give our guys credit, when it came time to defend and rebound, we defended and rebounded."
As the second half unfolded, the Lights (16-10, 6-8) started to steadily put some distance between themselves and the Warriors. With 7:04 to play, they had stretched their lead to 10 points, 55-45, and seemingly had control of the game. But, LC made some adjustments and the Lights went cold. They didn't score again until a Ryan Reeves' field goal with 21 seconds to play.
By then, the Warriors – with help coming from every position on the bench, had taken the lead. There was
Jeremy Franklin hitting a 3-pointer with 2:47 to go to tie the game at 55. He followed 30 seconds later to put LC up for the first time since a one-point lead with 15 minutes remaining.
"Our guys were able to get the stops we needed," Rinta said. "Different guys hit big shots down the stretch."
Unlike a loss at MSUN, the Warriors dominated the boards 39-28 with every player grabbing at least one and
Race Martin and
Derrick White leading the way with seven each.
Franklin wound up the leading scorer with three 3-point goals in his 18 points, while
Andre McCowan contributed 13 points.
