LEWISTON, Idaho – For three quarters, Lewis-Clark State's women's basketball team played point-for-point with 15
th-ranked Montana-Western Friday night at the Activity Center.
Then there was the fourth. The Bulldogs (21-6, 11-5 Frontier Conference) thoroughly dominated the final 10 minutes en route to the 63-48 victory.
"The fourth quarter was all them," said coach
Brian Orr after the Warriors dropped to 15-11, 6-9. "We quit looking to attack. We quit looking to shoot the ball. We didn't move the ball. We certainly didn't shoot the ball well."
The Warriors' fourth-quarter woes included being outscored 25-8 (after leading 40-38 at the of the third), connecting on just four of 13 field-goal attempts and being out-rebounded 8-3.
"It's just frustrating," Orr said.
Orr said he could pinpoint the exact stretch when the Bulldogs seized the momentum. After a miss by the Warriors, UMW rebounded, went downcourt and Savanna Bignell drained a 3-pointer. Then another Warrior miss followed by another Bulldog 3. Suddenly a 44-42 deficit was 50-44 gap. UMW went on a 13-4 run to close the game.
"The wind went out of our sails," Orr said. "Our first-shot defense was good and I thought we rebounded fairly well. In the fourth quarter, we just broke down."
Freshman
Abbie Johnson led the Warriors with 12 points and five rebounds.
Hailey Turner added nine points and
Jossilyn Blackman had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Warriors wrap up their home campaign Saturday with Senior Night honoring
Brittany Tackett and
Lauren Johnson. Tipoff against Montana Tech is 5:30 p.m.
