KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Trailing 10-1 after three innings, it appeared that Lewis-Clark State's 32-game winning streak against Oregon Tech was over. But, the Warriors pieced together their largest comeback in school history, and claimed a 16-14 victory over the Owls in the second game of a league doubleheader Sunday. The comeback, and
Tyler McDowell, overshadowed the best pitching performance this season by a Warrior in LC's 7-2 opening game victory.
With the sweep Lewis-Clark State improves to 32-8 overall and 22-4 in the NAIA West, while Oregon Tech drops to 21-26, and 10-16. LC's winning streak over OIT is now 33 straight.
No Warrior team had overcome a deficit larger than eight runs, a feat LC has done five times, but Sunday LC raised the bar. After allowing ten runs in three innings, the Warriors found themselves behind by nine runs entering the fourth. LC then scored 12 runs in the next three innings, eight in just the fourth, to take a 13-12 lead after six innings.
Tyler McDowell had two hits in the fourth inning, a double and a single, which along with his second-inning home run left him one hit shy of the cycle. He also scored two runs in the inning.
Thomas Lampkin Jr. started the rally with an RBI single, and
Kyle Callahan followed with a three-run home run.
Kasey Bailey and McDowell each singled to plate two more Warriors. Then
Darren Trainor's two-run double brought the Warriors to within one at 10-9.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the fourth, LC scored two more in the fifth to tie the game at 11-11.
Raymond Pedrina provided the power in the inning with a two-run shot.
Tyler McDowell then put his name the record books. Needing only a triple to complete the cycle, he did just that to lead off the sixth inning, becoming the first Warrior to record the feat since 2005. It also was his third consecutive game with four hits. McDowell came home on Lampkin Jr.'s single, to give LC the lead it would not surrender at 12-11. An error increased the Warrior lead to 13-11.
Oregon Tech made it 13-12 in the bottom of the sixth, before Warrior reliever
Tanner Simpson (1-0) ended the inning with a strike out, with Owl runners at second and third.
An Oregon Tech error in the eighth, and Trainor's ninth-inning two-run single put LC ahead 16-12. Oregon Tech's Austin Zavala's two-out two-run home run pulled OIT to 16-14 in the bottom of the inning. Warrior reliever Joseph Riley then recorded a strikeout, after consecutive singles by the Owls, to close the game.
Along with McDowell, Trainor had four hits, and led LC with four RBI. The Warriors had 19 hits in the game, eight coming in the fourth inning.
In game one,
Tyler Burch threw the first complete game of the year for LC. Burch (8-1) struck out a career-high and Warrior season-high 12 Owls, and allowed six hits. He did not issue a walk, and held Oregon Tech scoreless after the second inning.
An Owl error and an RBI single by McDowell gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Oregon Tech tied it up with single runs in the first and second innings.
The Warriors then broke it open in the fourth inning. After McDowell knocked in another Warrior run with a double, Lampkin Jr. belted a three-run home run, his third of the year, to give LC a 6-2 lead.
The Warriors tacked on their final run in the sixth when
Riley Way stole home on the back end of a double-steal.
The teams finish their five-game series with a doubleheader Monday starting at 11 AM.
