LEWISTON, Idaho – It was a game for the ages on Thursday night in the Activity Center when No. 16 Lewis-Clark State Men's Basketball upended No. 22 Providence 113-78. After finishing the first half with a two-point advantage, LC put up 70 in the second frame to run away with its 15th win of the season and avenge its loss to the Argonauts three weeks ago.
The Warriors hit 17 3-pointers, the most by the team this season, and were led by
Cordel Hankerson's 22 points. The senior hit six 3-pointers, the most by a Warrior this season and a career-best for the Houston native.
LC was 16-for-16 from the charity stripe, the second best performance by the Warriors without a miss in program history. Their 113 points marked the eighth time this season they have scored at least 110 points, a program record.
"Super cliché, but when the ball goes in it makes everything a little bit better," coach
Austin Johnson said after the huge win. "It's a team win, and we know in this league that winning is really hard."
The Warriors seemed in control to start the contest, jumping out to a quick 11-2 lead on a basket by
Race Martin three minutes in. The Argonauts closed the gap to four before
Josiah Westbrook nailed a 3 to grow the cushion back to 22-15 midway through the period.
Hankerson hit one of his six treys at the 5:32 mark to give LC its largest lead of the half, 12 points, at 32-20, but Providence rallied back to cut the Warrior lead to just two points, 43-41, at the half.
The second half was a completely different ballgame as LC answered with 70 points.
A pair of free throws by Martin kicked off a small seven-point run in the opening minutes of the half, capped by one from
Damek Mitchell to put LC in front 50-44 two minutes in. Back-to-back 3s from Westbrook and
David Shedrick sparked a nine-point rally that saw the Warriors leading 72-54 with 11:56 to play.
A triple by
Conner Moffatt at 5:12 started a 14-point run. Fueled by six points from
Blair Moore and another 3 by Shedrick, LC grabbed its largest lead of the match, 39 points, at 110-71.
"We did a much better job in the second half of making it a half-court game and defending. Our ball handling was great," Johnson said. "As fun as this is, we are going to enjoy this for a little bit, but the reality is our focus is squarely on Montana-Northern who is playing as well as anyone in the country right now."
LC shot an impressive 54.1 percent and were a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line. The Warriors were 17-for-32 (53.1 percent) from 3-point range, with Hankerson leading the way going 6-for-7 from beyond the arc. He finished one point shy of his career-best.
Four other Warriors scored in double-digits. Westbrook dropped 16,
Trystan Bradley notched 13,
Dana Abe added 12 and Mitchell had 11.
Every Warrior scored at least four points.
LC turns their attention to MSU-Northern on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
