Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors Race Past Providence

LEWISTON, Idaho – Brian Orr couldn't have said it better.

"When you make baskets," Lewis-Clark State College's women's basketball coach said, "life is good."

So good that in the early going, Orr's Warriors rarely missed en route to an 88-64 Frontier Conference victory over the University of Providence Thursday night at the Activity Center.

"We got off to a great start," Orr continued. "We did a lot of really good things."

Among the most impressive on the list are 61.11 field goal shooting in the first quarter (that includes 83.33 from 3-point range); turning the ball over just nine times while forcing the Argos to commit 20, and an impressive 19 assists.

"Everybody was making something positive happen when they were out there," Orr said. "We had a pretty balanced attack inside out. When you're able to knock down the perimeter shot, it extends the defense. And, we moved the ball well."

It was just as easy to cite the positives of the defense, which limited Providence to just 35.7 percent shooting from the field – 28.6 from 3-point range. Included in the Argos' 20 turnovers were 14 steals by the Warriors, which includes five by Peyton Souvenir. The Warriors converted those Providence miscues into 32 points.

"When our defense can do things like that," Orr said, "we're going to be awfully hard to beat because it takes so much pressure off our offense."

Jamie Nielson led the charge on offense with 19 points. She connected on eight of her 12 field goal attempts, which included three of four from 3-point range. She was backed by the 14 points of Hailey Turner and 13 from Abbie Johnson.

Nielson's efficiency wasn't a surprise to Orr.

"There's nobody that's in the gym more than Jamie," he said. "She's put in the work and the effort. I'm just so happy for her. All of her hard work was showing up on the court in this game."

The Warriors set the tone early by rolling out to a 28-9 first quarter lead. They expanded that to 46-25 at the half before building a 71-44 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

"Good things were going on on both ends tonight," Orr said.

The Warriors (14-4 overall, 4-3 in league play) return to the court Saturday afternoon when they take on Montana State-Northern at 2.

Providence, which dropped to 13-6 overall, 2-5 in league play, was led by Emilee Maldonado with 23 points. Parker Esary added 10.
