BILLINGS, Mont. - The No. 16 Lewis-Clark State men's basketball team faced off with Rocky Mountain College in an exciting Frontier Conference matchup on Saturday night. Derrick White hit a buzzer-beating 3-point shot as the clock ran out to send the game into overtime, but the Warriors fell 84-81.
Damek Mitchell was the first Warrior to respond to a 7-0 opening run by Rocky, putting LC on the board with a layup at 16:49. Dana Abe added back-to-back buckets to bring the Warriors within one.
Cory Dollarhide gave LC its first lead of the game, 11-9, with a 3-pointer at 13:17, but the Battlin' Bears quickly responded with an 11-point rally
The Warriors trailed by as much as 16 in the final six minutes of the first half, but managed to fight their way back into the game. At 3:25, Mitchell hit a 3 to spark a seven-point run. Dollarhide and Trystan Bradley hit back-to back buckets to close out the first half with LC trailing 38-33.
White struck first in the second half, dropping in a basket to cut the deficit to 38-35. At 18:32, Bradley added a put back for cap a 21-6 run by the Warriors as LC trailed by just one. White struck again with an impressive shot while being fouled to but the Warriors in front 41-40 at 15:40.
Josiah Westbrook went back-to-back with a triple and a layup to knot the game at 48 each with 12:52 remaining in the half.
Race Martin snapped an eight-point run by Rocky at 9:20 but the Battlin' Bears maintained a small cushion over LC.
With just over three minutes to play, Dana Abe drained a pair of free throws to bring the score to 63-61. Cordel Hankerson evened the score 63-63 on two foul shots with 2:55 on the clock. Mitchell hit a wide open basket at 2:16 to give the Warriors a 65-63 lead.
Rocky hit two-straight triples to regain the lead, but Abe responded with basket in the final minute to keep LC within two at 69-67.
As time seemed to run out for the Warriors, White sent a wild 3-point shot from deep into the basket to send the game into overtime tied 74-74.
The Battlin' Bears struck first in the extra five-minute period to go ahead 77-74, and Westbrook answered with a basket with three minutes to go. Abe dropped in a layup just inside the two-minute mark to even the score at 78 apiece.
Rocky Mountain took advantage of free throws with under a minute to play to take the contest 84-81.
Abe led the team in scoring with 18 points in the contest, and Mitchell added 16. Westbrook and White both scored 11 points. Mitchell led the defense with eight boards and dished out five assists.
The Warriors were an impressive 19-for-22 from the foul line with Abe leading the charge there going 8-for-8. Hankerson hit all four of his free throws and Mitchell was 4-for-5.
The Warriors return home on Thursday to host Montana Tech at 7:30 p.m.
