Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Alisha Alexander

Mitchell Drops 39 in Loss to Lights

HAVRE, Mont. - The No. 10 Lewis-Clark State Men's Basketball suffered their second-straight Frontier Conference loss on Saturday night at the hands of the MSU-Northern Lights by a final of 99-95. Despite a big night from Damek Mitchell, the Warriors were unable to overtake MSUN and fell to 2-2 in Frontier Conference play.

"MSU-Northern played a great game. Credit to them as we struggled to guard them individually and collectively," Head Coach Austin Johnson said.

The Warriors found themselves chasing 10 at the end of the first half. They came out firing in the second half with five 3-pointers in the first five minutes. Mitchell contributed three while Josiah Westbrook and Cordel Hankerson each added one.

A free throw from Cory Dollarhide brought LC within one of the Lights at 58-57 at the 14:07 mark in the second half. MSUN quickly took off offensively to build their lead back to double-digits, but the Warriors would not go down quietly.

A six-point run capped by a bucket from Dollarhide at 2:35 brought the score to 85-82, but that is as close as LC would get to the MSUN lead. Derrick White hit a basket as the buzzer sounded to bring the final to 99-95.

The highlight of the night was Mitchell's standout performance. His 39 points are the most by a Warrior since E.J. Farris scored 41 in the 2013-14 season. His career-high point total came off a 14-23 field goal performance, 6-9 from 3-point range. His 14 field goals are 10th all-time, and his 23 attempts are tied for third.

David Shedrick also had a strong offensive night with 13 points.

"It was good to see our guys battle back at multiple points but we need to get better defensively and do so quickly," Johnson said.

The Warriors return home next week to host No. 3 Carroll College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
