SALEM, Oregon – The No. 23 Lewis-Clark State Men's Basketball team collected its third-straight win to open the season with an 83-57 victory over NCAA DIII Willamette. They now hold a 3-0 record heading into a pair of exhibition games against NCAA DI opponents. Every Warrior scored in the contest.
"I am really pleased with how well our guys responded after last night's overtime game," coach
Austin Johnson said. "We got contributions from everyone and were much sharper with our defensive principles."
Travis Yenor and
Trystan Bradley got the Warriors off to a hot start when Bradley hit a 3 to follow Yenor's jumper in the first minute to give LC a 5-0 lead. At 17:30, Yenor dropped in a layup to make it 7-2 and the Warriors were off to the races.
Jake Albright joined in at 13:42 with a layup to give LC a five-point advantage at 12-7, and
Bob Boyd and
Josiah Westbrook helped the Warriors keep the slim lead with baskets of their own.
Damek Mitchell hit a 3-pointer at 10:03 and halfway through the opening half LC State led 19-12.
Mitchell dropped in five-straight with a jumper and a 3 to grow the lead to 28-16 at 7:49, and Bradley hit a 3-pointer coming out of a timeout to keep the offensive barrage going. In the final two minutes of the opening 20, Yenor hit a 3 and a jumper and Bailey made a free throw to send the Warriors to the locker room leading 46-31.
Bailey and Yenor both dropped nine in the first half while Mitchell added eight.
The Warriors continued to build their lead in the second half, beginning with a second-chance layup by Mitchell to jump start the LC offense. Free throws by Bradley and Bailey brought the score to 51-37, and Mitchell hit a 3 with an assist by
Khalil Stevenson to force a timeout at 16:15.
Boyd and Albright hit back-to-back layups midway through the half to put the Warriors up 64-45.
Dedrick Pakootas hit a 3-pointer and Boyd followed with a jump shot at 7:13 to make it 73-47. With under four to play,
Jaxon Hughes made a pair of free throws before
Daylon Potts hit a layup two minutes later to give LC an 81-54 lead. Pakootas added another bucket in the final minute as the Warriors went on to win 83-57.
Mitchell led LC State with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and five assists. Yenor dropped 12 points and Bailey had 11. Albright had a team-high nine rebounds. As a team, the Warriors outshot Willamette 42 percent compared to 35 percent. They forced 14 turnovers and collected 20 points off of them, and they outrebounded 47-32.
"Our ball movement and offensive awareness allowed us to execute some different things," Johnson said. "To start with a road sweep is hopefully a sign of our team's resilience in the future."
The Warriors head to Moscow on Tuesday to take on the Vandals in an exhibition at 7 p.m.
