BOISE, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State Women's Basketball team wrapped up their exhibition slate on Tuesday against the Boise State Broncos. Though the Warriors fell 88-34 in the exhibition, they head into the regular season with a 1-0 record.
The Warriors held the Broncos to just two points through the first three minutes of the opening quarter before tying the game 2-2 on a layup by Jamie Neilson at 7:06. Kiara Burlage put LC on top with a layup aided an assist from Abbie Johnson 30 seconds later. Boise State pulled back in front with a 3-pointer at 5:49 and the held the lead for the rest of the game.
Jansen Edmiston brought LC back within three at 4:20 with a pair of foul shots to bring the score to 9-6, but Boise State quickly rebuilt their lead to 13-6 less than a minute later. In the final minute of the frame, Heidi Sellmann drained a pair of free throws and hit a jumper, but at the end of the first 10 minutes, the Broncos led 17-10.
LC State once again opened the quarter with strong defense, keeping Boise State off the board until 6:57 in the second. Burlage put up the first LC points of the quarter with a pair of free throws, and Peyton Souvenir hit a 3 at 4:14 to cut the deficit to 24-15, but that was all the Warriors could muster as they trailed 33-15 at the half.
After a slow start in the third quarter, Souvenir and Burlage combined for four points in the fourth minute to bring the score to 50-21 in favor of BSU. Heading into the final quarter, Boise State led 63-21.
The Warriors exploded for seven points in three minutes with free throws from Edmiston, a layup from Sellmann and a 3-pointer by Abby Farmer. Johnson found the basket at 6:27 to make it 71-32.
The Broncos went on to win 88-34.
Edmiston led the Warriors with eight points going 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Burlage led the defense with four rebounds.
The Warriors were near perfect from the free throw line at 14-for-16.
"Boise State is an extremely talented Division I team and has great players all around," coach Brian Orr said. "Even though the score didn't show it, we battled and definitely learned and got better today. The focus is now on our games this weekend."
With the exhibition slate behind them, the Warriors will host the Twin Rivers PT Classic on Friday and Saturday. They will open the tournament with Southern Oregon on Friday at 5 p.m., and will take on No. 8 Eastern Oregon on Saturday at 5 p.m.
