HELENA, Montana – The No. 24 Lewis-Clark State Volleyball team saw its winning streak snapped on Friday night at the hands of the Carroll College Fighting Saints. Though the Warriors had better numbers offensively, the Carroll blockers put up a wall the Warriors could not overcome. They took the five-set battle 18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9.
"Carroll made the plays when they needed to be made, and we didn't," coach Shaun Pohlman said. "Progress cannot be made without setbacks. A dose of humility goes a long way. I am disappointed in the fact that we have to learn the lesson, but optimistic that the lesson can be learned and we can bounce back from it."
The Saints jumped out to a 3-1 lead to start the first set before a pair of kills by Brooke Kaawa evened the set 4-4. Channa Hart sparked a three-point run that included kills from Carli Berntson and Kaawa to give LC State an 8-5 advantage. Another kill by Berntson was followed by an ace by Hannah Pond and kills by Hart and Kenzie Dean to give the Warriors five-straight and a 12-7 lead. The freshmen duo of Elyse Booker and Dean combined for back-to-back points as LC kept a steady lead over Carroll. Sydney Lawrence started a run of four, aided by kills from Tori Edwards and Morgan Ness, to grow the lead to 19-10. The Warriors rolled to a 25-18 set victory.
Edwards got the second start started with an assist from Josilyn Remick. After taking a 6-3 lead, a pair of kills from Berntson made it 9-4. The Saints battled back to tie the set 12-12 as the two teams embarked on a back-and-forth battle. Carroll took the lead and took the second set 25-23.
Carroll took the early lead in set three, jumping out in front 6-3. Kills by Ness and Edwards kept the Warriors within striking distance until a kill by Edwards evened the score 19-19. The Saints regained the lead at 21-19, but back-to-back kills by Edwards and Berntson knotted things up again at 21-21 and 23-23. Berntson put LC State back in front with a kill at 24-23, and a block by Ness and Lawrence put LC up 2-1 with a 25-23 win.
Edwards ended a 3-0 Saints run in the fourth, and kills by Dean, Kaawa and Berntson pushed the Warriors in front 10-6. Carroll rallied to retake the lead at 14-12. LC State fought back from a 22-18 deficit with kills by Lawrence and Kaawa to come within one at 22-21, but Carroll took the set 25-23.
A kill by Hart gave LC State a 3-2 in the deciding set. The Saints tied things up 5-5, but the Warriors added three points on a block by Hart and Ness, a kill by Kaawa and a Carroll error to lead when the teams switched benches. Carroll kept it close, tying the set 9-9 before taking a 10-9 lead. The Fighting Saints kept their momentum going, pulling ahead 12-9 to force a Warrior timeout. Carroll took the set 15-9 to take the match 3-2.
