LEWISTON, Idaho – The No. 12 Lewis-Clark State Women's Basketball team closed out the home games for this decade with an 84-48 win over Maine-Fort Kent on Tuesday night. Led by 14 points each from
Kiara Burlage and
Abbie Johnson, the Warriors used a big second half to improve to 9-2 on the young season. LC State allowed just 14 points in the second half.
"You have to give them (UMFK) a lot of credit because they came out shooting the ball really well," coach
Brian Orr said. "Our defense in that second half was stellar and then it really spread to our offense and we were able to get some baskets in transition."
The Warriors and Bengals came out of the first quarter tied at 17 each. LC State trailed for most of the quarter until a bucket by
Jamie Nielson in the final 30 seconds knotted things up.
UMFK hit a 3 in the opening minute to pull ahead 20-17 in the second, but
Hannah Burland responded with another one of her own to get things tied 10 seconds later.
Abby Farmer added a 3 and Burland found the basket again to complete a five-point run and put the Warriors up 25-20 at 7:50. LC State continued to build its lead from there and held a 39-34 advantage heading into the break.
LC State held the Bengals to just seven points in each of the last two quarters to completely take control of the contest.
Nielson and Johnson opened the half with two points each before free throws by Burlage sparked a 16-point run. Burlage,
Peyton Souvenir, Nielson, Johnson,
Sara Muhelhausen and
Abby Farmer all chipped in during the rally that put LC State in front 59-38 with 1:40 to play in the quarter. Farmer added a basket in the last 10 seconds to make it 61-41.
The offense continued to thrive in the final 10 minutes and outscored the Bengals 23-7. A 3-pointer by
Madeline Weaver gave the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 84-46 (38 points) in the final two minutes as LC State cruised to an 84-48 victory.
With the win over Maine-Fort Kent, the Warriors are 56-0 all-time when playing the same opponent on back-to-back days.
Burlage and Johnson led LC State with 14 points each. Farmer totaled a career-high 13 points to match Nielson and Burland added 12. Johnson led the defense with eight boards and four steals, and Souvenir dished out eight assists. Farmer tied a career-high with seven dimes.
"Our guards were really good tonight and were sharing the ball," Orr explained, and we were making shots. It's always good when you're making shots."
As a team, the Warriors shot 61 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3. They hit 9-of-12 free throws (75 percent).
They finish up their 2019 schedule on Thursday at Whitworth in Spokane, Wash. Tip off against the NCAA DII program is set for 1 p.m.
