Turner Joins 1,000-Point Club in Upset Win over No. 4 Montana Western

DILLON, Mont. - The No. 17 Lewis-Clark women's basketball team took over in the second half of its Frontier Conference tilt against No. 4 Montana Western, and came away victorious with a 68-63 upset win. Hailey Turner turned in one of her best performances of the season, notching her 1,000th-career point by tying her career-high with 19 in the game. Abbie Johnson tallied her second-career double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.

"That was definitely a good win for our team. Winning on the road against a top-ranked team after trailing at half was an important step in this team's development," coach Brian Orr said. We had a lot of players step up and make big plays at key moments."

"We executed well offensively the second half and got to the foul line which was the difference tonight," Orr added.

The Warriors grabbed the early lead thanks to a breakaway layup from Hannah Burland and a 3 from Cali Moscrip to go up 5-2. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at 7-5 with 6:42 on the clock. Turner dropped five-straight points on a pair of free throws and a triple to put LC back in front 10-9, but UMW quickly answered to regain the lead.

A drive to the basket by Peyton Souvenir knotted the score once again, this time 12-12 with under three minutes in the opening frame. Turner dropped the ball into the basket at the close of the first period and Western led 18-14 after the first 10 minutes.

The Bulldogs grew their lead to 10 in the first two minutes of the second period, but the Warriors battled back. An eight-point LC run was sparked with a basket by Johnson and fueled with 3s by Moscrip and Turner to pull the Warriors back within four at 28-24 with 6:04 to play in the half. UMW led 34-28 at the half.

Jossilyn Blackman and Johnson went back-to-back to open the second half and cut the deficit to two at 34-32. Turner scored with a layup to even the contest 36-36 with 6:30 on the clock and the Warriors kept it close for the rest of the quarter. UMW led 49-45 heading into the final quarter.

Blackman put the Warriors back in front 53-52 with a basket at 6:38. Two foul shots from the senior grew the lead to 55-52. Turner dished an assist to Souvenir who hit a clutch three to keep the offensive roll going for LC, scoring their ninth-straight point to bring the advantage to 58-52.

The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own to come within two, but free throws from Johnson widened the gap back to four at 60-56 with two minutes to play. A three-point play for UMW narrowed the LC lead once again.

Turner notched her 1,000th-career point with a bucket at 1:27 to push the lead to 62-59.

The Bulldogs began fouling the Warriors with 30 seconds left in the contest and LC went 6-for-8 from the line to hold off UMW and pull off the 68-63 upset win.

Turner led the game with 19 points, her 19th of the night being the 1,000th of her career. She was 7-for-11 from the field.

"What a great night for Hailey to reach 1,000-career points! She was really good on both ends and we needed that from her tonight," Orr said.

Johnson also had a big night, notching a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Souvenir added 12 points, Moscrip had nine and Blackman dropped eight.

"I also thought Abbie really stepped up tonight and had maybe her best overall performance as a Warrior," Orr said.

LC was 17-for-22 (77 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to UMW's 8-for-13. The Warriors out-rebounded the Bulldogs 35-26.

The Warriors face Montana Tech tomorrow in Butte, Mont. at 4:30 p.m. PT.
