No. 5 Warriors Split with No. 7 Pioneers in First Twin Bill of the Weekend

LANCASTER, Calif. - The No. 5 Lewis-Clark State baseball team collected their third win of the season on Saturday in a split against the No. 7 Antelope Valley Pioneers. The Warriors struck for seven runs on seven hits while a strong performance by Tyler Burch shut down the Pioneers as LC took game one 7-4. In game two, however, UAV got the better of the LC bullpen and they took the second half of the twin bill 10-6.

"We had two quality starts today with Burch and (Gerald) Hein on the mound," coach Jake Taylor said. "We weren't great out of the pen and struggled again getting a clutch hit or two with runners in scoring position."

GAME ONE - LCSC defeats UAV 7-4

The Pioneers threatened early with their first two batters reaching. A double play turned by Jesus Duran and Zach Needham minimized the threat and a ground ball fielded by Dalton Duarte got LC out of the inning.

A diving play in center by Thomas Lampkin helped save a run in the home half of the second to keep the game scoreless.

Jeff Bart worked a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth and advanced to third on a double to left center off the bat of Needham. Kyle Callahan knocked in Bart for the first run of the ball game with an RBI groundout, and Darren Trainor did the same to bring in Needham and put LC up 2-0.

Caden Goldby ripped a double down the left field line to kickstart the offense in the fifth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jesus Duran drove in his first run as a Warrior with a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 3-0.

The Pioneers brought their first run of the game across in the bottom of the fifth on a solo shot to left, but Burch forced a popup and two flyouts to end the inning.

An error by the UAV first baseman put Needham on to begin the sixth and Callahan followed with a single to right. Trainor put a ball in play and reached on a wild throw by the third baseman. Needham scored on the play while Callahan and Trainor both advanced to scoring position. Makana Victorine sent a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Callahan and Goldby drilled an RBI double into the gap in right center to put LC up 6-1.

Burch sat the Pioneers down in order in the sixth and seventh before handing the ball over to Jesse Parker in the bottom of the eighth.

A sacrifice fly brought in a run for UAV in the bottom of the eighth.

Victorine worked a walk to lead off the Warriors' half of the ninth inning and Jacob Gribbin wore a pitch to put two on with no outs. Kody Garvin flew out to right to advance both runners before Duran was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Riley Way, who had taken over on the bases for Victorine, scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 7-2.

After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, Joe Riley was handed the ball and struck out the first batter he faced. A base hit brought in two but that is all UAV would get as the Warriors took game one.

Goldby led the offense going 3-for-3 and five different Warriors knocked in a run.

Burch earned his first win of the season, going seven innings and giving up just one run while striking out five.

GAME TWO: UAV defeats LCSC 10-6

Gerald Hein took the mound in game two and sat the Pioneers down in order to end the first inning.

A.J. Davis  dropped in a two-out single and Gribbin was hit by a pitch to put two on for Duran. He took a pitch to the arm to load the bases for Needham who singled in two runs to give the Warriors the early lead.

The Pioneers loaded the bases with two outs and a walk brought in their first run of the contest. A ground ball back to Hein ended the inning with LC in front 2-1.

Gribbin singled to left to lead off the top of the fourth and stole second. He took third on a single by Needham to put runners on the corners. A ground ball by Callahan knocked in a run to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

UAV struck for a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut LC's lead to 3-2.

LC answered back quickly as Garvin got the top of the fifth started with a hard-hit single through the right side and stole second before Duarte drew a pinch-hit walk. Davis singled through the left side to knock in Garvin, and Gribbin smashed a ball off the left field wall and raced around the bases for an RBI triple to push the Warriors' advantage to 5-2.

Anthony Toribio took over in relief of Hein in the bottom of the sixth. Hein ended his day with five innings, two runs, two walks and struck out five.

Back-to-back doubles brought in a run for UAV before Cole Carder tied the game with a two-run shot to center. Ryan Kaser took over on the mound and inherited a runner on first with one out. After the Pioneers struck for five-straight to tie the game, the Warrior infield turned a double-play to get out of the inning.

The Pioneers scored two on a hit and an error to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh. They added three more in the eighth.

Garvin doubled to knock in Trainor in the top of the ninth, but that is as close as LC would get to a comeback as they fell 10-6.

Needham, Davis and Gribbin all logged two hits in the game and Needham had two RBI.

The Warriors face the Pioneers again tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. in Lancaster, Calif.
