DILLON, Mont. - The No. 22 Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team saw their run in the Frontier Conference Playoffs come to an end at the hands of the top-seeded No. 4 Montana Western Bulldogs. The Warriors led after the first quarter but the Bulldogs stormed back to take control of the game in the second and came away with a 71-67 win.
Peyton Souvenir scored the game's first basket with a layup at 8:54 to put LC up 2-0 before Turner added a jumper 40 seconds later to start the Warriors off on a 4-0 run. The Bulldogs responded with a 3 and Abbie Johnson answered with a bucket to keep LC in front. Souvenir sparked a five-point run with a 3 and the Warriors led 11-4 after a basket by Jossilyn Blackman with 4:00 left in the opening quarter.
After the first 10 minutes, LC led 15-10.
Souvenir hit a 3 to begin the second quarter, and Jamie Neilson completed a three-point play to grow the advantage to 21-12 with 8:32 on the clock. The Bulldogs battled back to take their first lead of the game at 22-21 with just under six to play. The shift in momentum paid off the UMW as they surged ahead to take a 29-23 lead into the half.
UMW continued to dominate in the third quarter, opening the period with seven-straight points to take a 36-25 lead. Cali Moscrip hit a 3 to snap the scoring run at 7:32 and bring LC back within eight.
The Warriors rallied for nine-unanswered points on 3s from Souvenir, Moscrip and Blackman to cut the deficit to 42-37 with 4:21 left in the third. Souvenir added another triple at the three-minute mark to bring the score to 44-40, but the Bulldogs answered with their own 3 to keep the cushion. Neilson stuck with the trend, hitting a 3 before UMW again did the same. The 3-point parade continued with another from Souvenir at 1:30.
Moscrip hit a 3, as did the Bulldogs in the final seconds of the quarter. UMW led 56-51 heading into the final frame.
LC was able to keep the deficit small in the fourth, but the Bulldogs hung on to win 71-67.
Souvenir led the Warriors with 19 points and Moscrip tallied 14. Blackman added 13 points and Neilson scored 10. Blackman ended her night with a double-double by adding 10 rebounds.
Montana Western advances to face the No. 2 seed, Carroll College, on Friday. They will host the Frontier Conference Championship game.
The Warriors will learn their fate when the NAIA announces the teams bound for the NAIA National Championships on Mar. 6.
