KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The NAIA announced the fan-vote slam-dunk winner for the 2019 NABC-NAIA Shoot & Slam, presented by U.S. Bank on Tuesday morning. With 848 of the 1,470 total votes, Lewis-Clark State men's basketball senior
Andre McCowan earned his spot as the fourth dunker in the contest.
"I'm very thankful for the support I received in the fan vote from those in the LC community, back home in Portland and of course from my team," McCowan said. "They worked hard to help get the word out and it paid off. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity and will try to put on a show like I have in Lewiston the last two years."
McCowan is one of two dunkers from the Frontier Conference selected for the competition, along with Rocky Mountain's Craig Wilmore. Taylor Boley from Judson (Ill.) and Patrick Burnett from York (Neb.) complete the group of student-athletes competing in the dunking competition.
The 3-point and dunk festivities take place on Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. PDT in conjunction with the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in Kansas City, Mo. All Division I and II men's basketball players with senior eligibility status were eligible to be nominated for the contests.
All four dunkers will be judged on two dunks in the first round, and each dunker must complete one dunk within a two-minute span. The two dunkers with the highest composite scores advance to the final round. The format is the same in the final round and the dunker with the highest score will be the winner. A panel of judges will score the dunks from 8-to-10 points.
LC's Jamaal Thomas won the dunking contest back in 2015.
