Men’s Basketball Upsets No. 2 LSUA with Win in NAIA Quarterfinal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 7 Lewis-Clark State men's basketball team continued their historic run on Saturday with an 80-76 win over No. 2 LSU Alexandria in the NAIA Quarterfinals at Municipal Auditorium. With their first-ever national tournament win in Quarterfinal, the Warriors secured a spot in the NAIA Semifinals on Monday. LC has now won 14-straight.

"We had another impressive performance by our guys," coach Austin Johnson said. "We showed so much heart and toughness for all 40 minutes. Trystan (Bradley) established our presence right away in the first half and our guys fed off of that. He embraced the big-time matchup he had and dominated early."

Bradley put LC on the board first with a layup at 18:48 and added a 3 two minutes later. After five minutes of action, Bradley totaled nine points and the Warriors held an 11-6 lead. The Generals stormed back within one point before Andre McCowan went to the line and made two free throws.

Cory Dollarhide struck for five straight Warriors points to extend the lead to 18-14 at 9:44. Damek Mitchell found McCowan under the basket to push the advantage to 20-14 and force an LSUA timeout.

The Generals took the lead at 5:33 on a 3-pointer by Devin Jackson. Cordel Hankerson regained the lead for LC with a triple, but LSUA quickly answered to jump back in front.

A pair of free throws by Bradley gave LC the lead at 31-30 with a minute left in the half. Mitchell answered an LSUA basket with one of his own to send the Warriors into halftime leading 33-32.

Mitchell hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the second half and followed it up with two more points before Hankerson hit a trey to increase the Warrior lead to 41-34. Dana Abe threw down a dunk a few seconds later to force another General timeout at 16:42.

Abe hit a trey coming out of the timeout to give LC an 11-point lead at 46-35. Dollarhide nailed another three-pointer at the 11-minute mark to keep the Warriors in front by a slim margin.

Josiah Westbrook knocked down a three-pointer and was fouled on his next triple try.  He made all three free throws to give the Warriors a 59-52 lead with just over seven to play. He added his 10th-straight point a minute later. David Shedrick hit a trey to put LC up by 10. Derrick White grabbed an offensive board and put it back at 3:36 and the Warriors maintained their 10-point advantage at 68-58. He added his second-straight bucket 30 seconds later to give LC a 12-point lead.

The Warriors hung on to win 80-74 to earn their spot in the NAIA Semifinals for the first time in program history.

Bradley led the Warriors with 15 points; with Westbrook close behind at 14. Hankerson added 13 points and Dollarhide dropped 10. Mitchell grabbed seven boards and White dished out five assists. Every Warrior who saw action in Saturday's quarterfinal scored.

For the second-straight contest, the Warriors hit nine 3-pointers. They shot 42 percent from the field and were 17-for-18 from the free throw line. They out-rebounded the Generals 39-37.

"Every guy chipped in and gave us a lift," Johnson said. "To outrebound a team with that size and athleticism again shows the toughness and focus this group has. I couldn't be happier for our guys and all the moments they've earned and enjoyed as a team. I am thankful those moments will continue for a few more days."

The Warriors (30-6) will face the winner of No. 11 Carroll and No. 13 Pikeville on Monday at 6 p.m. PDT.
