KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team closed out the 2019 regular season with a 12-7 win over Oregon Tech. Home runs from Callahan, Needham and Gribbin propelled the offense past the Owls as LC finished the regular season with a 34-13-1 record.
"Overall we had a very good weekend offensively," coach Jake Taylor said. "We are swinging the bats as well as we have all year."
LC got off to a quick start with a three-run first inning. A.J. Davis was hit by a pitch before Darren Trainor singled and Riley Way walked to load the bases. Kody Garvin doubled to bring in two and Way scored on an error to put the Warriors up 3-0.
The Owls responded with a four-run bottom of the second to jump in front of the Warriors, but Garvin came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Bart to tie things up 4-4 in the third. OIT regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, and LC answered in the fourth. Thomas Lampkin Jr. tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Davis.
The Warriors opened things up in the top of the fifth with a three spot. A Zach Needham single was followed by a walk to Bart, and both came in on a three-run bomb by Jacob Gribbin to put LC up 8-5.
In the top of the sixth, LC struck for three again. Callahan opened the inning with his 12th home run of the season. Needham went deep a few batters later with Way on base to make it a two-run blast and grow the lead to 11-5.
Way walked to lead off the eighth and took third on a single by Garvin. Bart brought the Warriors 12th run across with a single to center.
Andrew Najeeb-Brush took over for LC in the ninth and struck out three. The Owls struck for two runs in the inning, but the Warriors hung on to win 12-7.
Garvin led LC with three hits in the game and Gribbin led with three RBI. Garvin, Needham and Bart all knocked in a pair.
Tyler Burch got the start and tossed six inning. He allowed five runs, four earned, with five strikeouts. Kade Woods and Joe Riley each pitched an inning in relief and Najeeb-Brush closed out the game with three punch outs.
In the four-game series the Warriors hit 14 home runs. Needham led the charge with four while Callahan and Garvin each had three. Garvin finished the series with 11 RBI.
The Warriors now face a 26-day break ahead of the Avista NAIA World Series. The Series begins May 24 at Harris Field.
