LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team took a shot at their seventh walk-off win of the season, but fell short in an 11-inning battle with UBC. The Warriors struck for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at three. Both teams scored in the ninth and 10th before the Thunderbirds shut LC down in the 11th.
"Offensively we couldn't get anything going until late in the game," coach Jake Taylor said. "We had plenty of chances to push across the winning run but couldn't come up with an at bat."
Despite struggling with his command, starter Lalo Porras held UBC hitless through his first five and a third. The Thunderbirds notched their second hit loudly with a three-run shot into the left field bleachers to take a 3-0 lead.
Kade Woods took over on the mound and retired the next two batters. Jesse Parker came on with a runner on second and two outs in the seventh and induced a fly out before sitting the Thunderbirds down in order in the eighth.
Dalton Duarte led the home half of the eighth off with a loud double off the wall in right center. Jaden Phillips took over on the bases for him and moved to third on a lined single to right by A.J. Davis. Darren Trainor doubled to right to bring in the Warriors' first run of the contest. Kody Garvin cleared the bases to tie the game with a flared single down the left field line.
UBC regained the lead in the top of the ninth, but three straight walks to LC loaded the bases before Kyle Callahan scored on a wild pitch.
The Thunderbirds responded with a run in the 10th, as did the Warriors on a Garvin single and Callahan double to tie things up 5-5.
UBC struck again in the top of the 11th, but LC failed to answer and dropped the series finale 6-5.
Trainor, Garvin and Callahan all had two hits in the game and Garvin had two RBI.
Joe Riley took the loss after giving up a solo shot in the 11th.
LC hosts the College of Idaho next weekend in a four-game set beginning Friday.
