LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team fell into the losers bracket on Saturday night after dropping their second game of the tournament to the No. 2 seed Science and Arts. The Warriors struggled against the Drovers' starter, Colton Williams, who tossed a complete-game gem.
The defense was solid behind starter Justin Hammergren to begin the game. The Warriors escaped a jam in the bottom of the first, coming away unscathed before a double play turned by A.J. Davis and Kyle Callahan ended the second.
Science & Arts struck first with a monster shot over the batter's eye in center. Hammergren bounced back with two strike outs to get LC out of the inning.
Darren Trainor notched the first Warrior hit of the game in the fourth with a single to left. Courtesy runner Jesus Duran was left stranded, leaving LC trailing 1-0. The Drovers added two more in the home half of the fifth before Andrew Najeeb-Brush closed out the inning by inducing a flyout.
Jeff Bart started the top of the sixth off with a single through the left side. Thomas Lampkin Jr. reached on an infield single and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Davis. Trainor stayed hot at the plate and brought in the first Warrior run with a bloop single out of the reach of the diving second baseman.
That was the lone run LC could muster as they fell 6-1 to the Drovers. Trainor led LC with two hits and an RBI in the contest. They will face No. 9 Bellevue in an elimination game on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
"I think it's good we have the day off tomorrow," coach Jake Taylor said. "It gives us time to regroup. I thought we came out a little flat tonight."
