Being the first in my family to graduate has been a great achievement for me. It has kept me focused and motivated. I've always seen myself going to college, playing basketball and getting an education. In reality, there has been many pitfalls and obstacles that have tested my will on how bad I really want it. Everyone's story is different and that is what makes each person's path to success more compelling.
It wasn't given to me on a silver platter; I had to go out and get it. Lewis-Clark State College is a special place that created an opportunity for me that no one else did. I grew up in Inglewood, California in a small family that consisted of just my father and brother due to many family problems. I always had an interest in sports and I fell in love with not only the game of basketball, but improving my skills.
Being battle tested with injuries in high school and not receiving any scholarships to play basketball took a toll on me. Unable to supply a sufficient amount of funds to pay for school resulted me in attending a community college. Looking back, I couldn't think I would go to a community college because I thought that meant I was failing. Once I obtained my AA degree and finishing up my sophomore year of basketball, I was desperate to find a four-year school. There were some schools that were interested but we went our separate ways. During my recruitment I always told myself to go where you are wanted. If you go where you are wanted then you are going to have the best experience because you are going to go where your coaches, teachers, and teammates truly care about you. That's what Lewis-Clark State College brings to the table.
They give you the tools to get you to graduate, guide you, and have you prepared for the real world. Sure, it is a small campus and classrooms but that only assists you because it allows you to be more engaged with your professors. Being a student-athlete has been challenging but it is all been worth it. My experience here has been extremely fun on and off the court. I have made lifelong friends and great memories. I was blessed enough to find a place like Lewis-Clark State College.
