Volleyball Wraps up Perfect 4-0 Weekend at the Red Lion Invitational

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State volleyball team wrapped up the 2019 Red Lion Invitational on Saturday with two more wins, dropping just one set all weekend. They went 4-0 against three different teams to improve to 6-4 on the season

"We came in with good energy and good chemistry," senior Gionni Brown said. "Today we wanted to bring high energy and go all out without any hesitations, and I feel like we did that."

MATCH ONE: LCSC defeats Columbia Bible College 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-17)

The Warriors opened their first match of the day with three points on kills from Sydney Lawrence and Morgan Ness to take a 3-0 lead. The Bearcats of Columbia Bible College evened the set 6-6 before a kill from Brooke Kaawa put the Warriors back in front 7-6. After Denise Elder and Morgan Ness put down back-to-back kills to take a 10-7 lead, LC struck for three-straight aided by an ace from Josilyn Remick and two Bearcat errors to grow the advantage to 13-8. The Warriors benefited from blocks by Kaawa, Carli Berntson and Elder to extend their lead to 19-13 as they cruised through the rest of the set. A kill by Lawrence pushed the score to set point at 24-16 and a block by Lawrence and Edwards wrapped up the set 25-16.

LC struck for six unanswered points to begin the second set. A kill by Ness got the momentum going. Remick added an ace, followed by a kill by Edwards and a block and kill by Lawrence to put the Warriors up 6-0.  A block by Kaawa and Lawrence pushed the lead to 8-3 and two CBC errors made it 10-3. The Warriors continued their offensive attack with kills from Channa Hart, Berntson and Lawrence to open the gap to 16-9. A pair of aces by Remick added two more to the total. Jordan Hunter got in on the action to put the Warriors ahead by five at 20-15. A block by Ness and Hart moved the score to set point before a service ace from Kaawa gave LC a 25-19 set win and a 2-0 match lead.

A pair of errors, a kill by Josye Miller and an ace by Jess Ruffing gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead in the third set. The Bearcats surged to come within one at 6-5, but a block and kill by Lawrence and a kill by Miller pushed the lead back out to 9-6. CBC rallied to even the set 12-12, but an ace from Hannah Pond put the Warriors back in front 13-12. The ace sparked a four-point run that saw LC leading 16-12 at its end. A massive slam by Edwards and an ace from Remick, her fifth of the match, sparked a run of four to make it 21-15. The Warriors took advantage of three-straight CBC errors to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Lawrence led LC with seven kills and Ruffing dished 14 assists. Brown had 10 digs in the match.

MATCH TWO: LCSC defeats Warner Pacific 3-1 (25-19, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19)

Ness had the first kill of the match to open the first set and give LC the early lead. A point by the Knights was answered with three from the Warriors with a kill and block by Lawrence, as well as a kill by Edwards to make it 4-1. Elder sparked a five-kill run with a pair, followed by three-straight by Kaawa. The Knights kept it close until 19-15 when a block by Berntson and Elder sparked a five-point rally that included an ace by Brown and a kill by Ness. Kills by Ness and Lawrence closed out the set at 25-19.

After a WPU error, a kill by Edwards gave LC a 2-0 edge over the Knights. The Knights rallied back to tie the set 5-5, but a kill by Edwards swung the momentum back in favor of LC. Berntson followed up with a kill to make it 7-5. Brown served eight times in a row on a run that saw a kill by Lawrence and three-straight service aces with four total to extend the Warrior lead to 17-8. Kills by Lawrence, Ness, Edwards and Kaawa pushed the advantage to 21-11. LC rallied for four-straight and closed the set with a block by Elder and Edwards to take the set by a commanding 25-12.

Hunter provided the first LC kill of the third set with an assist from Remick. Miller added another to put LC up 2-1. Miller, Hart, Berntson and Hunter contributed four-straight kills to come from behind and give the Warriors an 8-6 lead. They held the lead until the Knights battled back to pull ahead 14-13, but back-to-back kills by Hart and one from Miller put the Warriors back in front at 17-14. A kill by Edwards brought the advantage to 21-18, but WPU erased their deficit to even the set 23-23 before taking it 25-23.

Ness and Edwards evened the fourth set 2-2 and Kaawa gave the Warriors their first lead with a kill to make it 3-2. The Knights stayed within one until a block by Elder and Berntson and an ace by Ruffing stretched the Warrior lead to 10-6. A kill by Ness and ace by Kaawa gave LC a five-point cushion at 12-7, and a kill by Lawrence helped keep WPU at a distance at 15-10. A block by Lawrence pushed the advantage to six at 18-12, and Edwards and Ruffing went back-to-back with kills to make it 21-14. A big block by Berntson and Lawrence pushed the score to match point at 24-19, and a WPU error gave LC the 25-19 victory and 3-0 match win.

Edwards led the team with 12 kills, with Berntson right behind her with a career-best 10. Remick dealt 25 assists and Ruffing had 23. Brown tallied 21 digs, while Elder led the Warrior with six blocks.

The Warriors are back at it next weekend when they host NCAA DIII Whitworth on Sept. 6. The match is slated for 4 p.m. in the Activity Center. Tickets can be purchased at lcwarriors.com/tickets.
