LEWISTON, Idaho – It was smooth sailing for the No. 12 Lewis-Clark State Men's Basketball team on Saturday night when it upset No. 8 Providence 90-71 in Lewiston. Led by a career-high 25 points from
Josiah Westbrook, the Warriors dominated all aspects of the game. LC State continued to show that it is the best 3-point shooting team in the conference, knocking down 15 in the contest with five each from Westbrook and
Travis Yenor. With the victory, LC State holds a share of the top spot in the conference.
"We play every game like it's the biggest game of the year," Yenor said. "That was a fun game because they are ranked eighth, but we have just as much focus going into that game than we do any other game."
Damek Mitchell flirted with a triple-double, dropping nine points with nine assists and 10 rebounds.
"We are trying to put together a full game and I think our biggest thing was defense and we held their play-makers," Mitchell said.
A bucket from
Trystan Bradley at 17:09 in the first half gave LC State a 9-8 lead and the Warriors never looked back. His basket sparked a run of 11 to put the Warriors ahead 20-10 by 14:20. Yenor scored five straight to make it 25-13 as the offense continued to hammer the Argos.
Hodges Bailey started a 10-point rally midway through with a 3 that saw LC State leading 35-18 by 9:05. A bucket by
Jake Albright made it 52-35 at the half.
Albright's bucket was part of an eight-point string that stretched into the second half.12-straight points for LC State came via the 3-ball halfway through the final 20 minutes. Yenor hit one more for good measure to give the Warriors their largest lead of the game (26 points) at 90-64 with 2:59 to play.
Westbrook led all scorers with 25 points, while Yenor added 23. Bailey dropped 16 points. Mitchell led with 10 rebounds to go with nine points and nine assists.
As a team, the Warriors shot 50.8 percent from the field (31-61), 46.9 percent from 3 (15-32) and 76.5 percent from the line (13-17). They out-rebounded the Argos 43-27 and held them to 42.4 percent from the field.
Zaccheus Darko-Kelly led the Argos with 20 points and seven rebounds.
The Warriors continue the home stand on Thursday when they host Montana Western at 7:30 p.m. in the Activity Center.
