ROCKLIN, California – Offensive dominance and clutch pitching propelled No. 19 Lewis-Clark State Baseball to its season-opening victory over the No. 14 William Jessup Warriors on Tuesday. LC State recorded 11 total hits in the 8-1 win, and solid outings on the mound held Jessup to just five.
The Warriors combined for six runs in the second and third innings, and added on in the fourth and ninth. LC State pitching allowed just two hits in the final eight innings. The one run scored by Jessup is the fewest allowed by the Warriors in a season opener.
"Offensively our approach early in the game was very good," coach Jake Taylor said. "We lost focus and energy in the middle innings and left some runs on the board. Pitching was a bright spot all around. Elias Moctezuma, Luke Tedrick and Greg Blackman combined to have a great first outing for our staff. Defensively we played well as a unit. Caden Goldby, Riley Way and Dalton Harum all made exceptional plays to take runs off the board for William Jessup."
Way took a four-pitch walk to get the 2020 season underway, but the Jessup defense kept LC State off the board in the first. Moctezuma got the start on the bump for the Warriors and gave up three-straight singles to put Jessup ahead 1-0. Harum turned a fly out to center into a double play when he gunned down a runner trying to take third, and Moctezuma got LC State out of the inning with a strikeout.
Aidan Nagle notched the first hit of the season with a line drive into left before taking second on a balk and stealing third. Luke White took advantage of his first at-bat as a Warrior, launching a double into the right field corner to tie the game 1-1. A single off the bat of Harum put two on with one out, and A.J. Davis brought in the go-ahead on an error. Goldby kept the momentum up for LC with an RBI-double down the right field line and Way knocked in the Warriors' fourth run with a groundout.
A double play and a groundout gave Moctezuma a quick 1-2-3 inning and sent LC State back to the plate for the top of the third.
Zach Needham opened the third with a single to right and Ephan drew a walk to put two on, and both advanced to scoring position on a fly out by Nagle. White knocked the courtesy runner, Jaden Phillips, in on a groundout to short, and a walk to Harum put runners on the corners. Davis kept up the offensive attack with an RBI base hit to make it 6-1.
Way got the fourth inning started with a bang, knocking a triple into the right field corner before a sacrifice fly by Johnson brought him in.
Tedrick took over on the mound for Moctezuma in the bottom of the fourth and collected a strikeout in a scoreless inning. He ran into trouble in the fifth with back-to-back walks and a single loaded the bases, but a double play turned by Way got them out of the jam.
Tedrick handed the ball over to Blackman in the sixth and Blackman kept Jessup off the board.
Davis and Goldby drew free passes to put two on in the ninth, and a single by Way loaded the bases up. Johnson brought in LC State's eighth run on an error.
Blackman closed out the game for LC State and earned the first win of the season.
Way, Nagle and Davis led the Warriors with two hits each, and White collected two RBI. Moctezuma and Blackman each tallied two strikeouts.
The Warriors open the Arizona Christian Tournament on Thursday with a game against Taylor (Ind.). First pitch is set for 9 a.m. in Phoenix.
