Edmiston's 21 Lift Warriors Past MSUN

HAVRE, Mont. – Jansen Edmiston scored 20 of her career-high 21 points in the second half to help propel 21st-ranked Lewis-Clark State College to a 67-60 victory over No. 18 Montana State-Northern in a Friday night Frontier Conference women's basketball game.

Jansen's heroics started after the Warriors were unable to get untracked in the first half and faced a 21-17 deficit at the intermission after trailing by as many as nine points in the second quarter.

"Like most of our games this year," coach Brian Orr said, "we struggled offensively in the first half. The good thing is our defense kept us in the game.

"The second half Jansen got us going and we had better ball and player movement."

Abby Farmer started the comeback with a field goal to start the third quarter to bring the Warriors (14-5, 6-3) to within 21-19. The Skylights (15-6, 4-5) responded to regain their four-point, 23-19, lead before the Warriors went on an 8-2 run to forge a 28-25 advantage.

As the LC offense started to thrive, the defense clamped down to enable the Warriors to control the third by outscoring the Skylights 23-13 and take a 40-34 lead into the fourth. But, MSUN responded to start the fourth by responding to every Warrior score then regaining the lead with successive 3s and a quick field goal after a blocked shot to go up 46-44.

The Skylights added two free throws for a 48-44 edge before Edmiston hit a 3 to trim the lead to 48-47 with 4:58 to play. The teams traded 3s then MSUN added two free throws with 4:01 to play for a 53-50 lead.  Jamie Nielson cut the lead to 53-52 but MSUN used another 3 to go back up by three, 55-52, with 3:05 remaining.

Nielson knotted the game at 55 with a 3 with 1:58 on the clock then Edmiston returned the lead, 58-55, to LC with 1:13 to play. Kiara Burlage was fouled with 32 second to play and made both for a 60-55 Warrior lead. After an MSUN miss, Edmiston was fouled and canned both for a 62-55 lead with 18 seconds remaining.

A Skylight 3 with 14 seconds to play cut the Warrior lead to four, 62-58, before Edmiston hit three free throws in two trips to the line for a 65-58 lead with :13 on the clock for the advantage LC needed to go comfortably into the final few seconds. The Skylights did hit a field goal with four seconds left for their final points before Peyton Souvenir wrapped up the 67-60 with two free throws with one second on the clock.

"This was a big road win for our team," Orr said. "We definitely need to start better but I really like how our team is playing. We just need to keep progressing."

Backing Edmiston's 21 (6-11 from the field, 3-5 from 3 and 6-8 from the line) were Burlage with 14 points and Nielson with 10. Burlage led the Warriors on the boards with nine with Edmiston and Abbie Johnson collected five each.

After struggling from the field in the early going (26.67 percent in the first quarter), the Warriors found their marks to hit 69.23 percent (9-13) in the third and 53.85 percent (7-13) in the fourth for 46.0 percent for the game.
