LEWISTON, Idaho – No. 9 Carroll College (20-8, 11-5) came to play on Saturday night when it upset No. 3 Lewis-Clark State (25-3, 13-3) 68-57 in a matchup that featured the top two teams in Frontier Conference Men's Basketball. Despite the loss, the Warriors are just one win away from clinching the regular-season Frontier Conference title.
"We just didn't play well at all," coach
Austin Johnson said. "It's the second-straight game we've turned it over too much. We shot poorly, took some tough shots, got some good looks. To give them 11 more shots than us – there's no way you're going to beat a good team at home or on the road when you give a team 11 more shots."
The Warriors led for most of the first half, starting with a basket by
Damek Mitchell and a 3-pointer by
Travis Yenor. A three-point play by Mitchell grew the lead to 8-2 at 16:09, but the Fighting Saints chipped away quickly.
A 3-pointer by Carroll's Dane Warp at the 2:31 put the Saints in front 24-23, but a bucket by
Hodges Bailey gave the Warriors back a slim lead. Yenor made it a four-point difference with a 3 at 1:26, and
Josiah Westbrook kept it there with his own 3 with 47 seconds left. LC State led 31-30 at the break.
Carroll took the lead out of halftime, and after a back-and-forth battle began to build it up. A 3 by Bailey kept it close, drawing LC State within one at 9:27, but the Saints continued to charge on. The Warriors dropped the contest by a final of 68-57.
Yenor led the Warriors with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Mitchell added 12 boards and eight boards, Bailey scored 11 points and
Jake Albright grabbed eight rebounds. Mitchell dished out six assists.
Warp led the game with 30 points. Jovan Sljivancanin notched a double-double for Carroll with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Shamrock Campbell had seven assists.
The Warriors hit the road for the final two games of the regular season. They take on Rocky Mountain in Billings, Mont., on Thursday before facing Montana Western in Dillon on Saturday.
