LEWISTON, Idaho – Scoring early and often was the theme of Friday's series opener between the No. 19 Lewis-Clark State Warriors and the visiting College of Idaho Yotes. LC State struck for 12 runs on 13 hits behind a strong start by Eric Chavarria en route to a 12-0 victory. The Warriors cranked four home runs in the contest, and Luke White finished his day a single short of a cycle.
"It was a solid all-around effort," coach Jake Taylor said. "Chavarria gave us a great start and we got the offense going early, so it was good."
The Warriors came out swinging; striking for a pair in the bottom of the first after Chavarria sat the Yotes down in order. A.J. Davis got things started with a double to left center, setting the stage for Aidan Nagle's first home run with the Warriors. His two-run blast to right put LC State up 2-0.
Another three-up, three-down inning by Chavarria sent the Warriors back to the plate for another big frame in the second. White got his day started with a triple to the right field corner, and a hit-by-pitch put Dalton Harum on first. Zach Needham walked to load the bases, but an errant throw to second by the College of Idaho catcher brought in White. Jaden Phillips put down a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position and Davis plated Harum on a sacrifice fly.
Jack Johnson added two more runs in the inning with his two-run shot over the wall in right center. His fourth home run of the season stretched his hitting streak to 13 games.
Chavarria worked around a lead-off single, silencing the Yotes with a pair of strikeouts in the third.
Brock Ephan led off the home half of the third with his fourth big fly of the season, growing the lead to 7-0. White did the same on a 1-2 pitch, hammering one to left center. Needham singled before being lifted for courtesy runner Coy Stout, and he scored on a single to shallow left center off the bat of Jaden Phillips. LC State led 9-0 after three innings of play.
White doubled to open the bottom of the fifth and took third on a passed ball. Needham drew a walk and Davis was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Johnson made it 11-0 with a single through the right side. Nagle added an RBI on a groundout, bringing in Stout.
Chavarria's day ended after six scoreless innings. He struck out five and allowed just one hit, walking one. Bryson Spagnuolo took over in the top of the seventh and did not allow a run through his three innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Johnson and White led the Warriors with three hits each, while Johnson and Nagle each knocked in three. LC State totaled six extra-base hits.
Chavarria leads the Warriors with three wins on the season, while Johnson and Ephan are tied for the team-lead in home runs with four.
The series with the Yotes continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
