SALEM, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State Volleyball team's winning streak came to an end on Friday night at the hands of No. 6 Corban University in Salem, Ore. The hosting Warriors, who remain undefeated on the season (16-0, 10-0) swept the LC Warriors by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-16. With the loss, LC State is 11-7 on the season and 6-4 in Cascade Conference play.
"Corban showed why it is ranked sixth in the country and why it will be in the running for a national title this year," Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman said.
The LC State Cross Country teams were also in attendance to cheer on fellow LC Warriors ahead of their races at the Willamette Invitational on Saturday.
"A huge shout out to cross country for coming out and supporting us," Pohlman added. "Love that kind of community feeling!"
Cassidy Nelson and
Channa Hart earned the first two LC Warrior points of the set with a pair of kills on assists from
Jess Ruffing as Corban jumped out to a 5-3 lead.
Tori Edwards and
Grecia Ung Enriquez went back-to-back to tie things up 5-5, but the hosting Warriors regained the momentum and stormed ahead 12-5.
Carli Berntson and
Jada Wyms put up a block before an ace by Ung Enriquez and kill by Nelson cut the deficit to four at 13-9, but Corban did not slow its attack and took the opening frame 25-16.
"The start of the first set was the best we had played all year, but with a team like Corban, you cannot give any runs of points," Pohlman explained. "Once we did, they just took off with it."
Corban carried the energy into the second set with a quick 3-0 lead. Hart got LC State on the board with a kill before Corban answered with another three points. Ung Enriquez continued her strong play with a pair of kills to keep LC within five at 12-7, and a tap over the net by Berntson made it 12-8. An eight-point run by Corban widened the margin to 22-10 before the home team closed out the set 25-15.
Nelson tallied the first LC State kill of the third frame as the Warriors battled to keep pace with Corban. Ung Enriquez helped cut the deficit to one with a kill at 7-6. After a run by Corban, Nelson rattled off back-to-back kills to bring LC within four at 12-8, but Corban took control of the set to end the match with a 25-16 victory.
The LC State offense was led by Nelson's eight kills. Ung Enriquez added five kills and five digs.
Hannah Martinez led the LC Warriors with 10 assists and Ruffing dealt seven.
Kenzie Dean led the defense with nine digs while
Kendzee Cloward added six.
The Warriors head to Eugene, Ore. on Saturday to take on (RV) Bushnell University at 5 p.m.
"We need to turn our attention to Bushnell tomorrow and be ready to come out and battle the entire match," Pohlman said. "A split this weekend still puts us on a good path toward making the conference tournament."
