OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Lewis-Clark State College Volleyball team traveled to the Washington state capitol to take on The Evergreen State Geoducks on Friday night. LC swept aside the Geoducks by scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-20. This win was pivotal as it put LC State ahead of Evergreen State in the CCC standings.
Evergreen surged out to an 8-3 lead to begin the match, eventually building its lead up to 18-11 until a Cassidy Nelson kill started the Warrior comeback. LC rattled off 10 straight points before a Geoduck response. The score sat at 22-21 in favor of LC State before kills from Tori Edwards and Carli Berntson gave the Warriors a 24-22 advantage. An Evergreen State attack error gave LC the opening set victory 25-23. LC State had 13 kills to go along with a .250 hitting percentage in the first set.
To start the second set, LC put the Geoducks in a 7-2 hole thanks to three Nelson kills. The Warriors built up leads of 13-5 and 20-12 as they only allowed Evergreen State to get within three points once through the rest of the set. Two kills from Grecia Ung Enriquez and one from Berntson shut the door on the Geoducks as LC State took a 2-0 edge in the match with a 25-20 win.
The following set saw the Warriors fall in a 3-0 hole, but kills from Nelson and Edwards shrunk the Evergreen lead to 6-4. LC rallied to tie the set 9-9 before jumping out in front 15-11 on an ace from Hannah Martinez. The Geoducks were persistent in their effort and came back to tie the match 19-19. A 5-1 Warrior streak, capped off by a Hallie Seaman kill, handed LC the match sweep. The set three triumph came with four aces, a .235 hitting percentage, and 15 kills to only seven for the Geoducks.Â
Nelson paved the way with 10 kills and four aces. Edwards and Ung Enriquez contributed eight and nine kills, respectively. Jess Ruffing and Martinez put together an impressive night as they dished out 39 dimes combined; Martinez with 22 and Ruffing with 17. Kenzie Dean was the LC leader in digs with 16. Channa Hart had herself an efficient night posting a hitting percentage of .455 with seven kills.
The Warriors held Evergreen to a .180 hitting percentage. LC had 14 more kills and 18 more digs than the Geoducks.
"Even though we started slow, it was great seeing everybody stay diligent and stick to the plan and take care of business in three", Head Coach Shaun Pohlman said. "A great night by Jess Ruffing and Kenzie Dean defensively and Channa Hart stepped up big. While multiple people stepped up and really helped us out at the service line. An all around team effort".Â
