LEWISTON, Idaho – For the first time in program history, Lewis-Clark State Women's Basketball forced three overtimes in a highly competitive contest in Lewiston on Friday night. The Warriors bested former conference foe Montana Tech 79-74, with three players notching double-doubles for the second time in the team's history.
Maddie Holm,
Sara Muehlhausen and
Heidi Sellmann became the second trio to accomplish the feat, joining
Caelyn Orlandi, Brittany Tackett and Hailey Turner (2015).
"What a game," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "Triple overtime and every possession was a battle. We had so many players step up and make big plays, but the fact that we had three players with double-digit rebounds says a lot about our toughness, and it was a big reason why we came out on top. We beat a really good team and it took a total team effort to pull it out."
Muehlhausen led LC in scoring with 16 points to go with 14 boards, a block and a steal. Sellmann put up 15 points and 12 boards, and Holm led the defense with a career-best 16 rebounds along with 14 points.
LC State opened the contest with 10 straight points with baskets by Holm, Sellmann,
Callie Stevens and a free throw by Muehlhausen. In her Warrior debut,
Ellie Sander sparked a run of eight that was followed by back-to-back 3s from
Adyson Clabby and Sellmann. The Warriors outscored the Orediggers 20-7 in the opening quarter.
Mataya Green drained a pair of foul shots to get the scoring started for the Warriors in the second.
Hannah Broyles, Holm and Muehlhausen tallied three straight layups to grow the lead to 28-16 with 2:41 to play in the half, and free throws by Holm and Green made it a 32-22 lead at the break.
The Orediggers used a big third quarter to cut the deficit and come within two of the Warriors by 3:57. Free throws by Muehlhausen and a jumper by Holm kept LC in front by a slim 39-35 lead before Montana Tech surged ahead 42-41 in the final seconds of the frame.
Clabby kept LC State within one at 44-43 on a pair of foul shots in the first two minutes of the final quarter, and
Rachel Schroeder put the Warriors back in front, 47-46, with a jumper at 6:25. Holm beat the shot clock with an assist from Green to continue the back-and-forth to the end of regulation and force overtime.
Montana Tech struck first in the extra period to take a 54-52 advantage. Broyles kept LC within one with a free throw with 3:12 on the clock before a put-back by Muehlhausen gave the Warriors a 55-54 edge. Tech answered, but another second-chance basket, this time by Sellmann, kept LC in front 57-56 in the final minute. Two foul shots by the senior made it a three-point difference, but the Orediggers kept pace with a 3 to tie. A go-ahead jumper by Clabby did not hold as the game went into double-time.
Broyles kept the game tied 63-63 with a jumper 30 seconds into the frame, and Sellmann kept it knotted with two free throws two minutes later. The Orediggers struck for a 3-pointer, and foul shots by Sellmann and Clabby kept the Warriors in the hunt and send the game into a third overtime, a first for LC State.
Sellmann came in clutch after a missed free throw by Green, grabbing an offensive rebound to put it back and give the Warriors a 71-70 lead. A huge three by Stevens on an assist from Holm made it 74-72 in favor of LC State at 3:06. Holm grabbed an offensive rebound and sent it to Stevens into the corner for another dagger 3 to grow the lead to five 30 seconds later. Free throws by Green sealed the 79-74 victory.
Along with the three doubles-doubles, Green led the Warriors with three assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Clabby added 10 points and Stevens chipped in nine.
The Warriors conclude the Twin Rivers Physical Therapy Classic on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Rocky Mountain College.
