LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State Volleyball team is officially postseason bound. Despite a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-17) loss to No. 7 Corban University on Saturday, LC State clinched the No. 6 seed in the Cascade Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, and will face third-seeded Oregon Tech on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Klamath Falls, Ore. LC finished the regular season with an overall record of 16-14, 11-11 in conference play.
"The team has worked hard to reach the top half of the conference and we did that," Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman said. "Not a bad way to start a new conference in our first (full) year, especially a conference as tough as the Cascade. I feel the pressure is on the No. 3 seed at home to do what they need to do, and we have played pretty well on the road."
Prior to the match, LC State celebrated departing seniors
Lexi Trowbridge,
Jess Ruffing and
Tori Edwards.
CCC powerhouse Corban took control early in the first set with a 7-0 run. A kill by Edwards put the LC Warriors on the board, but another run by the Corban Warriors made it a 12-1 deficit. A kill by
Jada Wyms aided a three-point run at 21-13, but Corban took the next four points to end the set.
LC turned things around after falling behind 7-1 in the second. Kills by Edwards and
Josie Peters fueled a four-point stretch to cut the deficit to three at 10-7, and a pair of swings by
Grecia Ung Enriquez brought LC within two at 13-11. The hosting Warriors went on a run of four with kills by Peters and
Carli Berntson at 21-19, but Corban took charge to end the set with four straight points.
Blocks by Wyms and Berntson helped LC to a 4-3 lead early in the third set, and a kill by
Channa Hart and an ace by Ung Enriquez kept the Warriors in front 7-6. A six-point stretch by Corban swung the momentum back to the visiting side and pushed the set to a 25-17 ending to complete the match.
Ung Enriquez led LC State with seven kills and Edwards added five. Ruffing dealt a team-high 12 assists and
Kenzie Dean tallied nine digs.
The Warriors will travel to Klamath Falls, Ore., on Tuesday to face the OIT Owls in the Cascade Conference Championship Quarterfinal. The winner will advance to the semifinal hosted at top-seeded Corban.
"It's going to be a quick turnaround and a long drive, so it will be important for us to get in some rest and be disciplined in taking care of off-the-court things so we can focus on our on-court performance," Pohlman said.
A full preview of the match will be released on Monday.
