LEWISTON, Idaho - LC State Women's Basketball took on Northwest University on Friday night in the Activity Center for its second conference matchup of the season. The Warriors' 70-59 victory was highlighted by performances from
Maddie Holm and
Mataya Green.
Holm led the Warriors with 14 rebounds, 13 points, six assists and three steals to end the night in a dominant fashion and notched her fifth double-double in seven games. The sophomore also had a career-high in assists and steals. Green, a freshman, was also active with a career-high of 11 points and four blocks.
"I know we gave up some open 3s, but I really like our effort defensively," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "We made them work for everything and in the end, we came up with a couple of timely steals that ended with us shooting layups. I thought
Mataya Green came in and hit some big shots, and she gave us a real lift with her energy on defense.
Maddie Holm had another outstanding game, and her effort on the defensive boards helped us secure the win.
"It's always good when we can come away with a win knowing that we are capable of playing much better than we did tonight," Orr explained. "And tomorrow we get to see what it takes to be successful in the second game with a quick turnaround."
Sellmann and
Sara Muehlhausen started the night off; Sellmann with a steal and Muehlhausen with a free throw.
Hannah Broyles sparked a run with a 3 to give the Warriors some momentum and Holm extended it with a jumper shortly after to make it 9-4 early on.
Northwest bounced back to bring the score within one. Muehlhausen made a bucket and Broyles followed shortly after with a 3 before assisting Muehlhausen with a beautiful pass to set her up for a layup with just less than two minutes to go. Broyles hit one from beyond the arc to give LC a 19-16 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Warriors experienced a bit of a drought for the first couple minutes in the second frame, as did the Eagles, until
Adyson Clabby put up two to give LC a 21-16 lead.
Madeline Weaver had a good drive to get the bucket and Green followed with a layup to force the timeout by Northwest with 5:49 on the clock. NU answered with a 3 out of the break, but
Ellie Sander worked in the paint for a jumper to respond.
On the next Warrior possession, Green made a basket near the free throw line to make it 29-22 with 3:34 left in the quarter. She also earned a pair of free throws after an attempted put-back from a tough offensive rebound. Just before heading into half,
Audrey Miller kept the energy high on the court with a 3, extending the margin to give the Warriors a 12-point lead, 36-24, heading into the locker room.
Stevens and Holm both put up buckets quickly out of the break to give LC a 40-27 cushion early in the third quarter. With less than six minutes of play to go, Sellmann found some space to put up a jumper before Holm had a block on the other end. Holm came back shortly after and hit a 3, off an assist from Stevens, to give her nine points heading into a media timeout.
At the 2:19 mark, Northwest made a 3 to give the Eagles some energy and continue a run to cut the LC lead to 51-43. After a break, Weaver ran the floor for a layup off an assist from Holm to create a 10-point margin of 53-43 with less than two minutes on the clock. Green answered an Eagle layup with one of her own to give the Warriors two more points and a score of 55-45 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Northwest cut the deficit to eight points early on in the final period, and the Warriors were scoreless for the first couple minutes. Back-to-back steals by Holm and Stevens ended with layups from Stevens to bring LC State some energy and extend the score. Holm had a jumper shortly after a timeout to make it 63-52 with more than four minutes to go in the game. Green hit a jumper and Muehlhausen followed with a bucket, off an assist from Holm, to make Northwest call the timeout with 48 seconds left. The Warriors ended the game with a final score of 70-59.
Holm led Warriors with 14 rebounds, 13 points, six assists, and three steals. Green led in blocks with four. Stevens scored 10 points, and Green and Muehlhausen each had 11.
Grace Meza led the Eagles with 19 points and six assists. Sam VanLoo led with 12 rebounds and two blocks. Livi Lindsey added 12 points as well.
