LC State Baseball Tallies 20 Runs to Tackle Eastern Oregon

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Warriors extended their winning streak to 13 games on Sunday with a sweep of Eastern Oregon to complete the 4-0 series win. No. 9 LC State Baseball totaled 20 runs between the two games, with a 10-3 victory to start that day, and a 10-0 (7 innings) rout in game 2. With the wins, the Warriors are now 22-2 (15-1 CCC) on the season.

LC had solid starting pitching as well, with Eric Chavarria earning his third win in the first game of the day. Jesse Parker was solid in relief, as was Greg Blackman in game two in relief of Bryson Spagnuolo.

"It was a good weekend all the way around for Warrior Baseball," Head Coach Jake Taylor said. "There is a healthy competition for innings and at-bats on our team. We will get right back to work tomorrow."

GAME 1: LC State def. EOU 10-3
Chavarria opened the game with a pair of punchouts and sent the Warriors to the plate. LC State wasted little time putting runs on the board in the first game of the day.

Riley Way led off the first with a hustle-double and took third in a single up the middle A.J. Davis. Dillon Plew knocked in the first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to right before Davis crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give LC State a 2-0 lead.

Chavarria erased a leadoff single by connecting with Davis at second to pick off the lead runner. The starter recorded three strikeouts in the inning, though one reached on a dropped-third strike, to bring his total to five after two innings.

The Warriors' 1-2-punch of Way and Davis opened the home half of the third with back-to-back singles. A throw in to third put both in scoring position before Way scored on a sacrifice fly by Plew for the second time in the game. Jack Johnson doubled to the gap in left center to plate Davis and make it a 4-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers struck for their first run of the game on a walk and two hits in the fourth to cut into the LC lead.

Chavarria's day was done after five innings and seven strikeouts. He allowed one earned run before handing the ball over to Parker. He sat EOU down in order in the sixth.

LC State added on in the bottom of the sixth using the long ball. Aidan Nagle singled to open the inning with a single into right before Matt James launched a two-run shot over the wall in right center.

Johnson doubled off the batter's eye to start the Warrior offense in the seventh and came around to score on a single up the middle by Brock Ephan. He took second on a wild pitch before James walked. Both reached scoring position after a flyout and scored and Needham's third single of the game. LC led 9-1 through seven.

Parker ran into trouble in the eighth after walking a batter and giving up three hits. One run came in to score before a passed ball brought in one more. Parker struck out a batter for the second out before being lifted for Eli Shubert who struck out the first batter he faced.

LC capped its scoring in the eighth when Way came around to score on a single by Johnson. Shubert closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Way (3-for-3), Johnson (3-for-5) and Needham (3-for-3) each had three hits in the game while Plew, Johnson, James and Needham each knocked in two runs. Way scored three runs and had a stolen base.

Warrior pitching combined to strike out 11, with Chavarria collecting seven strikeouts. Parker and Shubert each struck out two.

GAME 2: LC State def. EOU 10-0 (7 innings)
Warrior pitching combined for a shutout in the afternoon matchup. Spagnuolo worked out of a jam in the second after an error put two in scoring position. The starter struck out his second batter of the inning to end the threat in the second.

Ephan stretched his hitting streak to 11 games with a single through the left side in the bottom of the second and scored on an RBI single by Nagle to put the Warriors up 1-0.

Blackman took over on the mound in the fourth and worked around a pair of leadoff walks with a pair of strikeouts to get the Warriors out of another tight spot.

LC State added another run in the fourth with a short two-out rally. Ephan reached on a walk and back-to-back singles by Luke White and Nagle brought in a run to push the lead to 2-0.

Warrior pitching and defense continued to suppress the EOU batters, aided by a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth.

Just when the game seemed to be inching its way through nine full innings, the Warriors decided the end things early with an eight-spot in the seventh.

Dalton Harum got the ball rolling with a double before Zach Threlfall hit his first-career big fly to left to put two more runs on the board. A error put Way on first before three straight singles by Davis, Plew and Johnson equated to two more runs. Nagle came to the plate with two on and two out and sent a moonshot to the Tennis Center over the wall in right to make it 9-0. Free passes to Harum and Threlfall and a single by Way loaded the bases, and the game ended after Davis was hit by a pitch to bring in the 10th run.

Nagle led the way with three hits (3-for-4), while Plew and White each had two. Every Warrior had a hit in the contest. Nagle knocked in five runs and Ephan and Harum each scored two.

Spagnuolo and Blackman combined to strike out seven batters in seven innings, while Spagnuolo fanning four in his start and Blackman striking out three. The two allowed just five hits in the shutout and Blackman walked two.

LC hits the road for the next two weekends when they travel to Oregon Tech and Corban. The Warriors host their final homestand of the regular season on 23-25 against College of Idaho.
