SALEM, Ore. – The double-digit scoring streak may have been snapped, but the streak of victories grew to 21 in the 8-4 victory over the Corban University Warriors on Sunday. Seventh-ranked LC State completed the season sweep of Corban and improved to 30-2 on the season and 23-1 in Cascade Conference play behind a home run by
Dillon Plew and a strong performance on the mound by starter
Alec Holmes.
"We came out a bit flat offensively today," Head Coach
Jake Taylor said. "Once again though, our offense produced enough timely hits."
Holmes earned the victory after going five and striking out nine. He walked one and allowed two runs on six hits.
"Alec gave us a good start and worked out of several situations and left runners on," Taylor said. "Our bullpen was pretty good in the final four innings."
In true LC State fashion, the Warriors put up a three spot with two outs in the third.
Riley Way started the rally with a single up the middle before
Jack Johnson was hit by a pitch. An RBI single by Plew brought Way in and a two-RBI double down the left field line by
Brock Ephan made it 3-0.
Alec Holmes collected a pair of strikeouts in the home half of the inning, but not before a walk and two hits put the Corban Warriors on the board to cut the lead to 3-1. He struck out the side in the fourth to work around a pair of Corban hits.
Two more Corban hits and a sacrifice fly brought the opposing Warriors within one before another strikeout by Holmes ended the threat and ended the fifth. He was lifted in the sixth for
Bryson Spagnuolo who threw a 1-2-3 inning.
Johnson picked up a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh to put a runner on for Plew's two-run blast, his sixth of the season. LC continued to take advantage of free passes with walks to Ephan and
Luke White and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Sam Linscott was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a walk to
A.J. Davis brought in a run. LC State led 6-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Matt Driver took over on the mound in the seventh and gave up a run on three hits.
Greg Blackman came on in relief the next inning and struck out one.
Linscott and Davis both reached after being hit by pitches, and Way drove one in with an infield single. Johnson brought Davis in with a sacrifice fly to make it an 8-3 advantage.
A solo shot was the extent of the damage by Corban in the ninth before Blackman struck out a batter to end the game and complete the season sweep.
Way led LC State with three hits in the game. Plew, Nagle and Davis each collected two hits and Plew knocked in three.
Holmes put together a quality start with nine punchouts in fives innings. He allowed a run on six hits and walked one. Spagnuolo and Driver each struck out one in their innings, and Blackman fanned two in his two innings. The bullpen did not allow any free passes.
The Warriors will take on NCAA Division II Saint Martin's in Lacey, Wash. in a doubleheader on April 16. The first game is scheduled for noon on the road.
